HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The regular meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held last evening. There were present : Messrs. M. Niccol (in the chair), Crowther, Atkin, Ambury, Sturges, Dignan, Udy, and Major Isaacs.

Hospital.— House Surgeon reported 65 males and '21 females remaining in the Hospital at date. There were also reports from the Lady Superintendent and Dr. Bell, but they contained nothing of special interest. ■Refcges.—Mrs Brophy reported 73 males and 23 females in the Upper Refuge at date, and 46 males and 14 females were reported as being in the Lower Refuge. Ryan's Case.— reference to the death of Frank Ryan, Dr. Lindsay wrote acknowledging a letter from the secretary, of the 31st, and saying : " The facts are as stated by me in my depositions to the police au- j thorities, and laid before the coroner. They were not commented on by him, and were openly stated in the public Press. The question was a purely medical one, and I was surprised that the Board should have discussed it. In my reports I do not merely record my own opinions, but am guided by the diagnoses of the cases, as ma le by the honorary medical staff. I have talked over this matter with Dr. Bond, under whose care the man Ryan was in the Hospital, and he declines to have any alteration made, so that I must refer the Board to him and to the honorary staff as a whole, if the Board think it worth while to discuss the matter further." It will be remembered that there was an addendum to the report of the case, saying that death took place after the extraction of a tooth at the Golden Chariot. This addendum the Board desired to have erased. This request, as It will be seen by the above, Dr. Bond Refused to accede to. The report was revived. House Committee. — The House Committee made a report, but the only material matter contained in it was a recommendation That Dr. Humphrey Haines be asked >o operate upon all those whom he thinks le can benefit, and that no action be taken .gainst the contractor in respect of the >edding and clothing burned on 26th ult. The report was adopted. Vacancies.—lt was decided to postpone Slling up the vacancies in the Board till b meeting of the Waitemata County Council nad been held, and made a nomination. The Dnehunga Borough Council submitted the name of Mr. Chas. C. Fleming as their nominee. The Case of R. Feltus.— to this matter, Mr. F. G. Ewington wrote stating his understanding of the matter as to Feltus' departure for Sydney. Mr. Ewington said he had had the man under his observation for some time previous to his departure. Feltus appeared sane, and he believed he was sane, and that his part in getting him off to Sydney was to get him to friends whom he understood would give Feltus a fresh start in life. Mr. Ewington was confident Feltus could earn his own living if he chose, and was neither dangerous to himself nor others. It was decided to send a copy of Mr. Ewington's letter to ihe Government, and let them do as they pleased in the matter. Costley Committee.—lb was resolved to discharge the Costley Investment Committee, there being only one member left on it, and to let the Board's solicitor deal with matters of arrears of interest in future. The accounts having been passed, the Board rose.
