INDUSTRIAL SCHOOLS.

Wellington", Monday. A return was laid before the House today, showing the number of committals of children to Industrial Schools on magistrates' orders from the Ist January, 1833, to the 31st March, ISSB, showing separately the committals under subsections 1 and 3 of section 16 of the Industrial Schools Act of 1 SB*2. The total committals on the magistrates' order in 1883 numbered 320, dwindling down to 67 in 1888, the total being 1500. The children committed under the Industrial Schools Act of 1882, who are now maintained by the Government or the Charitable Aid Boards within the above period were 583. Committed under subsection 1 of section 16 : In Auckland North there were 2 ; Auckland, 38 ; Waikato and Thames, 4. Under subsection 3of section 16: Auckland, 2 ; Waikato, 3. The memorandum states that of 77 committals under subsection 3 there are 55 at least which do not appear to differ in any important respect from cases of committal under subsection 1. Of 55 cases referred to separate districts Auckland has 1-1 and the Waikato 3.
