THE MINING REVIVAL.

It is understood that unusually rich gold is being obtained in the Kapanga mine, Coromandel. An engineer from Christ-church who returned yesterday from an inspection of the field was surprised at the remarkably rich quartz obtained, and ho is negotiating for lands with a view to boring operations being carried on in the Corornandel district. There are now good prospects of the Kapanga coming to the front as a dividondpaying mine. Its low levels being assured for gold gives encouraging hopes of the permanency of the gold deposits of this district. The surface discoveries having proved so amazingly rich justifies the probabilities of deep mining at Coroinandel. [from our own correspondrnt.] Thames, Tuesday. Saxon.— The contractors for opening up the new low level commenced operations this afternoon. The distance they have to drive is 550 feet, but the reef (No. 3) is expected to be met with in about 40 feet from the starting point." There is nothing fresh to report trom the other workings. Sylvia Claim (Tararu).— The new low level tunnel is in a distance of about 270 feet, with the country much firmer than formerly. Yesterday a nice-looking reof, about 15 inches thick, was intersected, but though the mineral indications were good, no gold was seen. Askiiam-Molloy . Works. — Since Mr. Hales has had charge of ..these works, ke has effected one or two alterations which has enabled the plant to be thoroughly tested, having made several lengthy runs of late, although treating nothing but tailings collected from about the premises. The difficulty of obtaining suitable gratings for the pulveriser has been temporarily overcome by the placing of the fine mesh gratings inside the coarser ones, instead of vice, versa, as before. This plan, so far, has acte.i admirably, for the coarse gratings now act as a support to the fine onee, and prevent them from bursting. The pans are working well, a good current of electricity being supplied them by the two dynamos in use, the action of the electric current, on the mercury being plainly visible. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Thames, Tuesday. Nuw Manokau.—No. 5 lode in the stopes above No. 4 level is at present yielding good grade quartz, ■ more gold being seen than for some time past. Trenton. — The contractor expects to complete the erection of the new engine by Saturday next. Three boxee of gold (27340z) were forwarded to Auckland per Rotoraahana by the Bank of New Zealand.

Te Aroha, Tuesday. In the Warden's Court to-day, several applications for special claims were adjourned till next sitting of the Court, so that the Warden might have time to visit the areas applied for. He stated that unless he saw special reasons for granting these large claims the applications would be refused.

Puriri—Allkgkd Robbery of a Mine. —A correspondent writes : —" The Hidden Treasure mine seems to be unfortunate in the attempts—some of which have been successful —to steal quartz from their workings. On Monday last, during the absence of the owners in Auckland, the mine was deliberately opened by several men, who, in broad daylight, burst up the nailed bands over the shaft, which they descended, and broke down the reef, notwithstanding a notice fixed on the side of the shaft to the effect that any person or persons breaking into the workings would be prosecuted. What the outcome will be of these repeated outrages on the property of men who have spent their time, money, and lengthy mining experience to do good for this district I do not know ; but I do know that every miner from Ohinemuri to the Thames, who has heard of it, earnestly hopes that the perpetrators will be brought to speedy justice. lam informed that the owners of the Hidden Treasure -calculate that they have had considerably over lcwt of picked stone stolen frdin their workings. '.'. MINE MANAGER'S REPORTS. Trenton. — Instructions have been forwardod to the mine manager that ae soon as Mr. McDermott's contract is finished and the work taken the sinking of the shaft is to be resumed with day labour, pending the calling for tenders to sink the shaft, and when the contract is let, to dispense with the day labour, the contractors then to- take trp the work of sinking. Colonist (Wairongomai.)—We have been driving on the Hero reef, and have come on what I think will prove to be a new run of gold. There is in trie hangingwall part of the reef about two feet of free nulling ore, which ehows gold freely, and on the footwall the mineral stone, which I have been assaying lately, the results already forwarded, to you. I believe this will prove to be a very valuable discovery judging from its present appearance.
