In our Wednesday's paper we announced the death of Matthew Arnold. Deceased was the eon of the famous scholar and teacher, Dr. Arnold, of Rugby, and was himself celebrated as a poet, scholar, critic, and thoologian. He was born in 1822, and was educated, at Winchester, Rugby, and Oxford. He won tho Newdigate prize for English verse, and other high honours at the University. In 1857, three years after his first acknowledged volume

of poetry, he was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford, and held the chair until 1867. In 1870 Mr. Arnold published an essay on political and social criticism, entitled, " Culture and Anarchy," which created much stir. For relief from political and social evils he chiefly looks to " culture." His other prose works are:— "Literature and Dogma," "St. Paul and Protestantism," "God and the Bible," " Last Essays on Church and State." Mr. Arnold's yearning for calm peace and beauty and sweetness and light, became quite a cult amongst a certain class. Mr. Arnold has rendered great service to the cause of education. He was for many yeare a Lay Inspector of Schools, and having been appointed to inquire into the state of education on the Continent, he travelled there for some time, and drew up some most useful reports.
