WELLINGTON NOTES.
{BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] Wellington, Wednesday* POLITICAL. The interview between Sir Harry Atkinson and Sir Robert Stout appears to have begun and ended in nothing. Sir Robert Stout publicly denies that any political object whatever was contemplated by either party to tho conversation, or that there is any ground whatever for the rumour that he is about to re-enter public life. The statement that he would accept office, he says, is equally groundless. COMMUTATION OF MILITARY PENSIONS. The Post, in a leader this evening, says that the desire of the Government to commute pensions of this class "is the latest development of the retrenchment policy." The writer argues against the wisdom or expediency of this proposal. Taken by itself, the commutation of pensions may be regarded as a perfectly legitimate means of relieving the colony of a portion of its financial burthen. MINISTERIAL MOVEMENTS. The Minister of Lands arrived in Wellington by the Rotorua this morning, and transacted business in Government Buildings to-day. Owing to the postponement of the Northern trip of the Mararoa the Premier and the Minister of Justice aro not expected here until Saturday. The Minister of Public Works visits Napier before coming to Wellington, and is not expected until Sunday, The Minister of Education comes to Wellington overland, and will arrive here probably on Saturday.
