[by telegraph, association.] r Wellington, Saturday. ' Hid autumn meeting of the Island~Bay Racing Club was held to day. The weather was fine, and about 800 persons were present. The racing was good. The following were the results t— Local Handicap of 40sovs. One mile and a quarter. Mr. J. Leopold's Cupid, 3yrs, 6st 121b (Poulson) 1 Mr. T. Marshall's Fabrication, aged, 7st 121b (Gillott) ... 2 Mr. W. Davies' Giriri, aged, Bst 31b (Avery) 3 Kangaroo, The Flower, and Fugitive also ran. Passing the stand the first time Giriri, fabrication, and The Flower were leading abreast, with the others close up. Passing Holmes's Fabrication came away, and entered the straight first, hard held. Fifty yards from home Cupid came up with a great rush, and was landed a winner by a short neck. Time, 2mins 16Jsecs. Dividends, £8 7b. Flying Handicap of 50sovs. Six furlongs. Mr. P. Butler's Marlboro', 4yrs, Bst 91b (Holmes) _ 1 Mr. T. Thompson's Little Scrub, aged, Bst lib (Farrell) , 2 Mr. R. Higgins' The Gem, aged, 7st 31b (Vaile) ►. .<• 3 Sweetie also ran. The latter was left at the post. Marlboro' won hard held with the greatest ewe. Time, lmin 18sec. Dividend, £2 108. Hurdle Handicap of 70sovs. Two miles and a distance. Mr. S. Powell's Promotion, aged, 9st 51b (Pell) ... ... ... ... ... 1 Mr. Hathaway's Orient, aged, list 121b (Gentry) ... ... . ... 2 Mr. J. L. Oliver's Germaine, aged, 9st 81b (Lang) ... 3 Kangaroo also ran. From an excellent start Promotion at once cut out the running, followed by Germaine and Orient. This order was maintained for first round. Passing Holmes the second time Orient passed Germaine, and tried hard to get on terms with the leader, but could never catch him, Promotion winning by a length. Time, 4min 18sec. Dividend, £2 15s. Island Bay Handicap of 200sovs. One mile and a half. Mr. W. H. Keith's Escapade, Syr® (Keith), 7st lib... ... ... ... 1 Mr. J. Munn's Miss Dargon, syrs, Bst 21bs (Vaile) 2 Mr. P. Butler's Marlborough, 4yrs, Bst 41b (Holmes) 3 Dudu was scratched. Beresford, Little Scrub, Her Ladyship, and Wakatipu also ran. Marlborough and Wakatipu were made hot favourites. Little Scrub had all the worst of the start, the rest remaining together. Escapade at once went to the front, pulling hard, with Wakatipu and Marlborough close up. Passing Holmes Miss Dargon rushed up, but could never collar Escapade, who won hands down by a length. Time, 2min 37isec. Private watches made time about 3sec longer. Dividend, £5 15s. The Handicap Hack Hurdle Race was won by Gladstone beating a field of eight. Dividend, £12. Selling Race of 20sovs. One mile and a J distance. Mr. P. Tancred's First Water, aged, 7st 71b (Carr) 1 Mr. A. J. Keith's Sawdust, aged, 7st 71b (Keith) 2 First Water winning by a length. Nothing on the to tali tor. Te Aro Handicap of SOsovs. One mile and a-quarter. Mr. P. Butler's Marlborough, Bst 61b (Holmes) 1 Mr. J. Munn's Miss Dargon, 7st 51b (Vaile) 2 Mr. H. Redwood's Sweetie, 7st 21b (Barrett) 3 Dudu, Escapade, Little Scrub, Germaine, Giriri, The Gem, and Wakatipu were scratched. Sweetie had a good lead for half the distance, when the others drew on her, Marlborough winning easily by half a length. Time, lmin 12£ sec. Dividend, £2 12s. Consolation Handicap of 20sovs. One mile. Mr. Higgin's The Gem, aged, 7st 31b (Peters) 1 Mr. R. Brown's Wakatipu, 4yrs, 6st 121b (Birdett) 2 Mr. Munn's Miss Dargon, sys (Vaile) ... 3 Little Scrub and Germaine also ran. The Gem won a capital race by half a length. Dividend, £4 10s.
CANTERBURY TROTTING CLUB. Christchuroh, Saturday. The first meeting of the recently-formed Canterbury Trotting Club was held on the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Grounds this afternoon, and was fairly attended. There were a fair number of acceptances for the various events. The principal events resulted as follow :— Handicap Time Trot (saddle), about three miles.—J. Rodique's Victor (40seo behind), 1; W. Cliff's Blue Gown (scratch), 2; W. and C. Kerr's Gipsy (60sec behind), 3. Time, Bmin llsec. Dividend, £4 Is 6d. Handicap Harness Trot, three miles.— R. Young's The Rogue (20sec behind); 1 ; Kerr's Wait-a-While (GOsec behind), 2; E. Murfith's Betsy (35sec behind), 3. Dividend, £12 3s. |
