On Saturday forenoon the s.s. Southern Cross proceeded to Drunken Bay to liave her compasses adjusted, returning to her berth nt Queen-street Wharf in the afternoon. Yes- — terday, at 3 p.m., she sailed for Fiji, where she will resume her former running between -■ Suva and Tonga and other islands. She takes flo passengers and but little cargo this trip. On her way she will call and coal at Opua. > At one o'clock on Saturday afternoon, Messrs. Donald and Edenborough's wellknown Island steamer Richmond took her departure from the Railway Wharf with Several passengers and a large cargo for ?onga, Tahiti, &c. Shortly afterwards the .schooner Julia ■fc. , Pryce got under weigh, and sailed for Rarotonga. She took no passengers, but had a full cargo, the details of which are given " *bove. The brigantine Ada C.Owen shifted from v, • her berth at the Railway Wharf and hauled ' - (alongside the ship Timaru, into which she is ,lfco discharge 100 tons of copra. : On Saturday evening, at half-past six, the 4 ,brigantine Gleaner arrived from Oamaru with

a mixed cargo after a' very stormy passage, during whicn the . mate, Mr. C. Brown, was swept overboard in a gale and drowned, while Captain Ryffel and one of the crew had very narrow escapes from a similar death. The particulars are given elsewhere. Oamaru was left on the 23rd inst., and light variable winds were experienced till the 26tninst., when a heavy westerly pale set in. On the evening of the 27th the wind changed to the S.S.E. and blew with hurricane force. On the 28th the wind moderated somewhat, and on the 3rd instant the schooner put into Hick's Bay, and set up the standing rigging, which bad suffered considerably From the great strain to which it had been subjected. Light winds prevailed across the Bay of Plenty, and port was made as stated above. The barque Weathersfield, from Brisbane 1 to Lyttelton, has gone ashore in Cook Straits, and it is supposed that the accident is in conequence of the same mistake that caused the loss of the Pleione, namely, thinking that Kapiti was Stephen's Island. The crew have all landed safely. All that is known about the shipwreck will be found in another column. At daylight yesterday the Agnes Donald, schooner, Captain J. Lavis, came into port from Lyttelton. She experienced very rough weather, and was forced to use oil bags, besides taking shelter in Waiapu roadstead on the Ist instant. She was towed out from the wharf at Lyttelton on the 23rd ultimo, and at G p.m. on the 25th ultimo, Cape Palliser bore W. i S.; at the same time next day was abreast of Cape Turnagain; on the 27th passed Kidnapper's Point at 6 p.m.; on the 28th, at 11 p.m. passed Portland Point. Gable End Foreland was sighted on the morning of the 28th: Tologa Bay was passed at noon, and Open Bay at 4 p.m. At 10 a.m. on the 30th the East Cape bore W.N.W., and at 10 p.m. anchored in Waiapu roadstead till daybreak on the Ist inst. On Tuesday, 3rd, saw brigantine Gleaner, and schooner Mimiha on 6tn abreast Port Charles, and arrived at 4 a.m. on Bth inst. At 4 a.m. yesterday, the schooner Dunedin arrived from Napier in ballast after a passage of 13 days. Captain Hansen reports rough weather and strong winds, and states that he was wind-bound in "Hick's Bay for four days. She was outside the harbour all day Saturday waiting for a wind to come in. The s.s. Suva, Capt. Todd, from Wellington and East Coast ports, arrived here at 9.30 p.m. yesteraav. Of the trip, Mr. Dale (purser) reports the Suva left Wellington at 5.45 p.m. on the 4th ; arrived in Napier at 4 p.m. on the sth; left again at 6.45 p.m. on the 6th; arrived in Gisborne at 5 a.m. on the 7th; left again at 8 a.m., calling in at Tologa Bay, Tuparoa, and Hicks' Bay. Experienced light north winds from Welliugton to Gisborne, thence strong north-east winds and heavy swell to East Cape, thence head winds to arrival.

Gairloch, from Waitara, came into the harbour at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday with cargo and passengers. The Union Co.'s s.s. Hawea, 720 tons, Captain Hansbv, arrived from the South at 7.30 a.m. yesterday. She left Dunedin at 4 p.m. on the 3rd, and arrived at Lyttelton at 9 a.m. on the 4th: left again at 9.15 p.m., and arrived at Wellington at 0.30 p.m. on the sth ; sailed again at 4 p.m., ana arrived at Picton at 9 p.m.; T left at 8 a.m. on the 6th, and arrived at Nelson at 3.45 p.m.; sailed at 6 p.m., arriving at Taranaki at 7 a.m.; left the latter pore at 7 p.m., crossed the Manukau bar at 5.30 a.m. on the Sth, and arrived as above. Experienced light northerly winds and fine weather throughout.
