Whiteside (58) played a fine free innings, hitting hard and clean to all parts of the field. G. Mills, I. Mills, and T. Mills all played well for then- runs. [Communication with the South Island being interrupted, the report of this match, played on Thursday last, was not received until yesterday.] [BY TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christohurch, Sunday. ■ Owing to the exceptional severity of the weather on Tuesdayafternoon and throughout the whole of Wednesday, play in the match, Lillywhite's Eleven v. Eighteen of Canterbury, was not resumed until Thursday, and then upon a wicket so absolutely sodden by rain that good batting was out of the question altogether, and a bowlers' day .out was prophesied, and turned out to be the case, as although the weather was. all that could be desired on resumption of play, the wickets fell fast throughout the afternoon. At ten minutes past twelve Read, with 25, and Ullvett, with 16, took their stand at the wickets, and Wilding started bowling to Read, who scored a single off the first ball; but Ullyet having snicked Dunlop for two in his firs* over, skied Wilding to long on, and W. P. Reeves made a well-judged catch. Newham, who was next, was clean bowled, and Briggs, Lohmann, Smith, Preston, and Brann were rapidly disposed of, whilst Pougher scored 10, and was then bowled. Clarkson came in, and left at once, and. the innings closed for 75, Read carrying hit bat through for a well played 44. The second innings of the home team commenced by Cuff and Dunlop facing the bowling, and having scored 4, the latter was bowled by Briggs. Studholme and Crawshaw did little to increase the score," whilst Cuff was caught when he had put together 12 runs, and Labatt was smartly thrown out by Briggs. Barnes, Mathias, W. P. Reeves, and Harman, went down in rapid succession, and after risky play H. Reeves was stumped without having added to the figures, whilst Wilding was put out lbw. A poor stand wat: made by the others, and the innings closed for 80. With half an hour left for play, Newham and Pougher appeared at the wicket, but not much interest was taken in the play and the bowlers seemed to take things very easy. At half-past five p.m. the stumps were drawn, the scores standing at 31 for no wickets. The following are the scores — > ' Canterbury 'First Innings ... ... 14». lillywhite's eleven.— innings. Wo charge of admission could be made on the ground, and Lillywhite had to depend on the voluntary - contributions from the publio; hut although on Good Friday some 4000 people witnessed the game, only £24 was found in the boxes, "■'he attendance on Saturday amounted to about 2000; but the amount contributed has not ye'., transpired.
