MEDICAL OPINIONS ON VOLCANIC SOIL. - In the Manchester Health Lectures for the people, Dr. Ransome, Chairman of the Committee Manchester and Salford Sanitary Association, contributes a lecture on "Soils and Sites," and quotes approvingly the opinion of Dr. Buchanan, Chief Medical Officer to the Manchester Local Government Board, that " Wetness of Soil is the cause of Phthisis (i.e., consumption), to the population living upon it." He also endorsos Dr. Haviland's opinion that " Damp Soil is coincident with a high mortality." The Registrar General of Scotland confirmed that opinion, and added that: "Houses situated on impermeable soils, or on low-lying ground, and whoso sites wore consequently kept damp, had a very much larger number and proportion of cases of consumption than towns, villages, or houses which were situated on dry or rocky or on light porous soils, where the redundant moisture easily escaped."
