NEW MARK BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of tho Newmarket Borough Council was held yesterday evening, the Mayor (Mr. Morgan) presiding. Messrs. Lumpkin, Kent, Rose, Whisker, Bishop, Whyman, and Burgess were present,

New Member.—Mr. W. Hogg, the newlyelected Councillor, was introduced, and made the usual declaration. He was afterwards elected a "member of the Streets and Waterworks Committees.

Claim.—Mr. T. Cotter wrote on behalf of Messrs. Magee and Mulvihill, contractors, requesting the payment to them of the snm of £30 and costs, claimed as due since May last, for work done in the borough. It was agreed to pay the sum claimed.

Gates at Crossings. —Messrs. R. R. Holmes, J. Mason, and C. Sutton wrote requesting that the Mayor would send a telegram to the Minister of Publio Works, asking him to instruct that the gates be not erected at the railway crossings at New-market-street and Victoria Crescent, as the placing them there would seriously impede traffio. The Council resolved to approve of the deoision of the Government to erect the gates.

Footpath.—A letter was received from Mr John Morrison, who asked that the footpath surrounding the Carlton Club building be resaired.5 aired. It was agreed That the work be one, subjeot to the condition that the owner of the premises pays half the cosh"

Excavation.—A dangerous excavation upon certain property at the corner of Clare-mont-street and Kyber Pass Road was drawn attention to, and it was resolved "That Dr. Laishley, the owner of the property in question, be requested to ereot a fenoe at the place referred to."

Other unimportant business was transacted, and the Council adjourned till Thursday evening next, when a committee meeting will be held to consider the financial position of the borough.
