OWHAROA. Mb and Rows. —The manager reports that the drive is in 60 feet. Commenced atoping to-day. Reef looking very fair. There are 40 feet baoks. Eighty bags of good picked ore are ready for transit to Railey's at Karangahake, but the lowest tender for carting being £2 10s per ton, It will not be sent yet. Messrs. Grenville atad Hosie are on a visit to Mr. John Abbott, of Auckland. They are endeavouring to get that gentleman to fix up the Owharoa battery with a plant similar to Railey's, at a coat of about £500. Cambria. The mine manager reports:— The south crosscut at No. level is now in a 1 distance of 653 feet from the shaft, 29 feet having been driven during the last six working days. The country in the face of the drive is of a slidy nature. In the face of the eastern intermediate level there is only a olay scam. I have removed the men from here and put them to drive on a leader about 3 inab.es thick, composed of olay and rubbly quartz, 20 feet in from the winze. The western intermediate is in a distance of 29 feet from the winze. In this drive the reef is split up into small stringers, in which colours of gold are being seen. The leading stope west, over the intermediate, is along 9 feet from the winze. The reef is about IS inches in thickness. Colours of gold are being seen through tho quartz, when breaking down the reef. The leading stope over intermediate east is along 8 feet from the winze. The reef in this stops is 2 feet in thioknc«s. Colours of gold are being seen when breaking down the reef. 'i'he western drive on the hangingwall reef, No. 2 level, is in a distance of 137 feet from the crosscut. In the face of the drive the reef is about 15 inches in thickness. Gold is being seen here in the quartz when breaking down the reef. There are sevoral small stringers striking into the footwall. The drive on the cross leader is in a distance of 26 feet. Dabs and oolours of gold were Been through the quartz when breaking down the leader on Saturday last. The leading etope west, over No. 2 level, is along 116 feet. This stope is up to the place where the cross leader junctions with the haugingwall reef. A leading stops has been started on the cross leader to-day. The second stope- west is along 101 ft., and the third stope is along 96 feet. There are a great many stringers of quartz in both these atopes, mixed up with the mullock, which has to be selected before being sent to the battery, Gold is being seen in some of the stringers. The fourth stope west is along 69 feet. The reef in the face of this stope is one foot in thickness. Gold was seen through the quartz when breaking down the reef. The tilth stope west is along 46 feet. Thereof in this stope is about nine inches in thickness. Gold is being seen through the quartz when breaking down tho reef. The sixth stope west is along 20 feet. The reef in the face of this stope is about six inches in thickness. Colours of gold are being seen through the quartz when breaking down the reef. The fifth stope east is along to where the reef pinches out. The sixth stope east is along 2S feet. The reef in the face of this stope is 15 inches in thickness. Colours of gold are being seen through the quartz when breaking it ' down. Fifty seven loads of quartz have been crushed during the week for the return of 288oz of amalgam; eight loads were also crashed from the eastern intermediate level for the return of 3oz 13dwt of amalgam. There are five head of stampers running on quartz from the leading stopes over the intermediate levels. The mine manager wired yesterday :—"7olb specimens from leading stope on cross leader. Gold showing." Rose.—The mine manager reports: There is no change to note in the driving of the main level. Since my last letter the country has continued very hard, so that tho contractors have made little headway. It is now evident from the distance we are in, that the hard ground will carry home to the lode channel, which we are expecting to cut daily. Wo have risen on the No. 1 reef, and opened out No. 2 and 3 stopes, north and south of the rise. The stone coming from each is fairly good, and I believe will crush well. Wo intend to start bagging next week, and will commence carting as soon as there is sufficient bagged to keep the drays going. Saxon.—The mine mannger reports : The drive beyond Connon's block has been extended eight (8) feet in n good country for gold ; quartz seamß show in driving, but as yet the reef has not been picked up. The country still continues very good in the winze, and the reef shows gold all throngb, maintaining its siza of from two feet to two feet six inches. Nine feet have been sunk this week, making the winze 45 feet deep, and as all the quartz and mullock has to be lifted by bucket, it is my Intention to merely strip the reef for the remaining portion of the sinking, and break it all down when through. This will save lifting the quartz to No. 3 leveL There are about five loads of quartz now on hand. Contractors are making very good headway, having driven 22 feet this week, making 42 for the fortnight, or 67 in all. The country is very good here now. Connon and party crashed 13 loads and 501bs pickod stone for the return as per en. closed slip. Half-past four p.m.: Just touched a larger body of quartz in drive hillward of Connon's blook. This may prove to bo the reef.
