THE AUCKLAND EXHIBITION
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Ditnkdin, Wednesday. Wirn reference to the cablegram received on Monday as to the Argus having urged the Victorian Government to support Mr. Twopeny'a scheme for a Polynesian Exhibition at Auckland, Mr. Twopeny asks me to explain that ho had written to the Argus, suggesting that, with a view of giving political importance to the Inhibition, as a means of drawing the islands into the Empire, the Australian Governments should co-operate with that of New Zealand hi the carrying out of the South PaciGc Exhibition, and make it a Polynesian Exhibition. Mr. Twopeuy's argument was that Australia, to pursue a Pacific policy such as she desires with any strength, must not only act with New Zealand, but frankly recognise the geographical position of New Zealand, and act through, as well as with Now Zealand, giving her the leadership in Pacific questions, fie pointed out that New Zealand was perfectly capable of holding such an exhibition by herself, but that its importance as a political demonstration would be largely increased by the Australian Governments associating themselves with the undertaking. Mr. Twopeny tells me that he had no great hopes of anything coming from the suggested enlargement of the scheme, but thought it worth trying how the Australians would regard the proposal. If it comes to nothing, it; will at least enlist Australian sympathy for the New Zealand undertaking ; and if it should eventuate, the advantage to Mew Zealand, and especially to i Auckland, would of course be enormous.
