POLICE COURT.—Wednesday. (Berore Col. Lyon and Mr. D. H. Lusk, J P.) Drunkenness.—One woman was punished in the usual way. / / Adjourned.—The Papakura gamdiggers' assault case was to have come on, bat it was found that as the case had been remanded to Papakura, it oould uafc be taken in Auckland. Wifb Desertion.William Goodison was charged with intending to desert his wife at Auckland on Maroh 8. Defendant applied for an adjournment to Tuesday next, as his solicitor was Dot in attendance, and he understood that the Bench had no power to deal with the oaso. Mr. J. O'Meagher, on behalf of the proseotation, objected to any further adjournment; however, subsequently, be con- ' seated to » remand till Saturday. There was also a charge of larceny against the defendants Mr, Theo. Cooper prosecuted, and asked for an adjournment, to Friday, as the summons was only served that morning. Defendant objected to this case being adjourned, and said he could produce the receipt for the watob. Mr. Cooper said although the reoeipt was in the hands of Vise defendant, he was prepared to show that the case was the most gross oase of fraud that had ever come before the Court, Defendant replied that the watch had been purchased from him for £8 10s, when under the influence of liquor, and that next day he got bis watch back again by threatening to put the man in custody and giving a bill for the value of the watch. Remanded to Friday, and bail granted in his own recognisance of £10. The Rotorua Perjury Case.—Jane Graham appeared on remand upon the charge of committing wilful and corrupt perjury in the testimony she gave in the case Robertson v. Wilson and Horne, on May 11, 1886. Mr. F. Earl appeared for the defendant, and asked for an adjournment to that day week, as it had been arranged with the counsel for the prosecution. Mr. Hudson Williamson, who prosecuted, coincided with the application, and the Benoh granted the remand. Alexander Campbell was then charged with committing perjary in the same oase. Mr. Earl applied for an adjournment in this caseMr. Hudson Williamson said he also consented to an adjournment, as it was desirable to have the case brought before the Resident Magistrate to decide some nioe legal points which were likely to be raised. fie desired to have all the witnesses in the oase warned to attend on Wednesday next, or that warrants be issued for their arrest. There was an understanding that no expenses would be paid, but this was wrong, and he (Mr. Williamson) wished it announced that the expenses would be forthcoming. The prosecution was a public one, and undertaken by the Government, but Mrs. Robertson, on applying to the police to take up the case, found that they would not do so, and would require counsel to conduct the prosecution. Under the circumstances it was therefore a prosecution by the Crown. The Benoh granted the application to have the witnesses warned, fand remanded this oase also to Wednesday, Maroh 23.
