: HAWKE'3 BAY JOCKEY CLUB'S V ; AUTUMN MKETING. ' [BY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] : V Napier, Wednesday. The second day's races of the Jockey Club's ahtumn meeting was largely attended, fully 2000 being present. The racing was very good L and resulted in a couple of surprises. The Burke;. Memorial Stakes was won by Pearl. o'ne of the late Mr. Burke's horses, sold by his executors after his death. She was considered quite an outsider, but she did the three-quarters of a miie in lmin 16secs. The Selling Race was won by The Bard, who was absolutely last on the machine. The starting was indifferent, and caused great dissatisfaction, especially in the Burke Memorial Stakes. £4500 passed through the totalisator. The following were the results:— Selling Handicap of 60sove. One mile 1 and a distance. Mr, Murtagh's The Bard ... .... ... 1 Mr. Hewen's The Poet 2 Mr. Y. Dennett's Sylph 3 Strenuous and Talebearer also started. Dividends, £9 4* and £8 las. Time, 2mins lljsecs. The Poet was first to show in front,' but by the stand Sylph took command, who in turn was supplanted by The Bard before the sheds were reached. At the sheds The Bard had four lengths lead, Sylph being his nearest attendant, with The Poet and Strenuous lying next, Talebearer last. At the railway beud, Poet made his effort and passed ' Sylph, Strenuous coming along almost at the same time. Poet had only gone a few strides when the whip was drawn, but to no purpose, as Bard was full of running, and coming down the straight passed the post an easy winner by two lengths from The Poet, Sylph making a good finish for third, being just beaten on the post. Handicap Hurdle Race of lOOsovs. One mile and a half. * Mr. McCartney's Volcano, 10st 51b, (Hickey) 1 Mr. Ellingham'a Denbigh, list 61b (Ellingham) ... 2 Mr. Broughton's Hurricane, Sat 71b (Miller) 3 Erebus, Magnesia, and Snapshot also ran. Dividends, £5 10s and £4 15s. Time, 2mins 56aecs. Magnesia was first away, then came Snapshot, Volcano, Denbigh, Hurricane last, as the first hurdle was taken by Snapshot by a length from Magnesia, f.rebus and Denbigh alongside, next came Volcano and Hurricane. The hurdle in front of the stand still saw Snapshot first over, but he brought down some timber in getting over. Erebus and Magnesia rose almost together, with Volcano in close attendance. At the shed's hurdle, Snapshot again struck, and | showed evident signs of tiring. Shortly afterwards Denbigh went up to his side. After racing a few strides, the gelding dropped back beaten. Magnesia and Erebus also began to make their effort. At the railway bend Volcano's turn had now come, and Hickey letting his head go, he soon had Erebus, Snapshot, and Magnesia settled, and got on terms with Denbigh about a furlong from home. Here a splendid struggle was witnessed, and cries went up that Denbigh would outstay, but weight told, and the gallant little mare had to give way, leaving Volcano an easy winner by a length by the time the post was reached, Hurricane, several lengths away, third. The Borke Memorial Stakes Handicap, of lOOaovs. Six furlongs. Mr. P. Donnelly's Pearl, by Bolton Green —Pearl Ash (White), Bst 12lb 1 Mr. Mason's Spade Guinea (Derritt), 9st 111b 2 Mr. McLean's Soudan (Huxtable), 7st 101b 3 Pasha, Cinderella, Miss Dargon, Salisbury, Revoke, Kape, and Psycho also ran. Dividends : £10 128 and £10 Is. Time, lmin 16-sec. There was tremendous delay at starting caused by the jockeys on Pearl, Spade Guinea, Cinderella, and Pasha trying to get away. When the flag finally did fall Pearl had a strong advantage, followed by Spade Guinea, Revolt, Soudan, Cinderella, and Psycho. Then came Pasha, Kupe, Fsycho, and Salisbury close together, while Miss Dargon was left hopelessly in the rear, and had to make up a tremendous lot of ground. At the railway bend White took a pull on Pearl, and brought her back to third place, while Cinderella and Revoke were in the lead, running side by side, Pearl being as stated, third, Soudan fourth. ' When coming into the straight Cinderella, Revoke, Spade Guinea, and Pearl were almost on terms, with Soudan slightly in front of Kupe, Psycho, Salisbury, and Miss Dargon. A splendid race ensued, and tremendous punishing was administered to most of the horses. Pearl was seen to come away slightly with Cinderella and Spade Guinea. The excitement in the grandstand was intense, the winner being in doubt to the finish. When within a few lengths from home Spade Guinea and Soudan were coming very fast, but it was of no avail, Pearl winning by a length from Spade Guinea, some distance dividing her from Soudan, who was just in front of Revoke. Juvenile Handicap of lOOsovs. Six furlongs. Mr. Bevan's Lady Florin, by MusketFlorin, 9at 61b ... ... .. ... I Mr. Hunter's Whisper, 7st 51b 2 Mr. Melton's Mota, Bst 71b ... ... 3 Javelin, Lenore, and Waterfall also started. Dividends, £1 17s and £2 4s. Time, lmin 17sec. Waterfall was first away, but after a few strides, Whisper took the lead, and held it until nearly into the straight, when Lady Florin went to the front, and came in the easiest of winners by a length. Provincial Handicap. Mr. Mann's Waitiri, by Musket—Uira, Ssfc 121b 1 Mr. Munn'a bnati, 7st ... ... ... 2 Mr. Hunter's Mystery, "at 41b 3 Kahu and Kangaroo also ran. Dividend, £1 17a. Time, 2tnin 14seo. The flag fell to a splendid start, Kangaroo being the first to show in front, followed by Kahu, Mystery, and Waitiri, with Huata last. The grand stand sheds were reached in the same order, when Waitiri went up to third place. At the back Kahu was going up to Kangaroo, and Waitiri made a move at tho same time. At the railway bend all the horses had closed up together, Huata coming very fast at the back of his horses. A capital race ensued half-way down the straight, but Waitiri slowly drew away, followed by Huata, and won the race comfortably by a length from her stable companion Huata, who beat Mystery by the same distance. The jockeys injured at the previous day's racing are all progressing favourably. THE AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY CLUB'S AUTUMN MEETING. Ireoter's TKLEGRAM.I Sydney, March 16.
