VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

The usual inspection of the No. 3 Battalion was held at the drill-shed last evening, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Mahon. The companies represented were the Newton Rifles, under the command of Captain Robertson and his two lieutenants, and a very good muster; the Veterans, under the command of Captain Hazard, had only a moderate muster ; and the Gordons, under Captain White, Lieutenants Fairs and Hay, had a very good muster, in fact the best on parade. Lieutenant-Colonel Mahon, after inspecting the companies, handed them over to Major Pirie for position drill, and in this Major Birnie and Sergeant-Major Nelly rendered assistance. The Resignation Embroglio.—ln connection with the resignations of the Poosod by Rifles, we are informed that Captain McDonald tendered his resignation, and that of Lieutenants Martelli and Palmer, to Colonel Lyon on Monday, but he declined to reoeived them, and referred Captain McDonald to Lieut. -Colonel Mahon, the officer commanding the battalion, as being the proper person to receive them. We learn that yesterday the latter officer refused to accept them. Devonpokt Naval Artillery.—For some time there has been an inquiry going on in connection with some insubordination in this company, and there has also been a good deal of dissatisfaction in connection with the management of the corps. A ,er the parade on Monday night the annual meeting was held, when a large amount of animated discussion took place over a consignment of straw hats received from Malta for the corps through Messrs. W. H. Fenton and Co., and which had beeu seized by the Official Assignee in the bankruptcy of Fenton and Co,, and it seemed would not give up the hats unless trade profits were paid upon them. A motion calling upon Captain Fenton to produce the invoice was proposed, but Captain Fenton refused to put It, and it is said a very animated scene ensued. Subsequently, when statement of accounts was read, it was found that the auditors refused to certify the same, as there was an item of £96 not accounted for. Captain Fenton having referred to the opposition made to his ruling, Lieut. Dacre then placed his resignation in the hands of the corps. This the Company refused to accept, and the meeting then adjourned without anything further being done. ,
