THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE.
♦ The following telegram is the offioial report of the mail agent to and from San Franisco "Contract steamer Australia left Auckland at five minutes past two p.m. on the 9fch November; arrived at Tutuila on the 13th. when an accident occurred to one of the boilers, reducing the speed, and causing a delay of several hours; arrived at Honolulu at fifteen minutes past one p.m. on the 21st November, and left again at ten minutes past eleven p.m. same day, after a detention of ten * hours; arrived at San Francisco on Sunday, the 28th, at fifty minutes past six p.m.; mails delivered to postal authorities at nine p.m., being too late for transmission by that day's train. During the stay in Sato Francisco the mail agent's goods were transferred. to tho Zealandia, whioh boat was to resume her running in the service. Left San Francisco at seven p.m. on the ISth December, being five hours later than advertised time of sailing. The delay was caused by the Postal Department at San Francisco being unable to overtake the accumulation of work resultant upon a stoppage of the ordinary dally train from the East. Arrived at Honolulu on the 25th December aft twenty-five minutes past five p.m., leaving on the 26th 'at thirty-five minutes past six a.m., having remained there over twelve hours. On the 2nd January transferred to cutter at Tutuila the Samoa mails, where another delay of two hours took place, occasioned by the transference to the cutter of a number of passengers with cargo from Honolulu. Received pilot at Auckland at half-past five p.m., arriving at QueenStreet Wharf at seven (Signed) J. Baker, mail agent B.s. Zealandia."
