NEW YEAR'S DAY ATROTORU
[BY TELfcGKAPd. —OWN CORRESPONDENT, I Rotorua, Monday. The elasticity of the British mind was perhaps never better exemplified than at Rotorua on Saturday last, when the whole countryside assembled at Te Koutu grounds to initiate the new-born year, with a regular round of good old English sports. The depression of the financial barometer (marked here quite as severely as over the colony generally), seemed by general consent to be allowed to drop out of consideration for the moment; and although tha Tarawera mountain, the ranges to the east of the scene, and the Lake itself glitters white in the bright sunlight from the withering but fast disappearing effects of last year's eruption, the subject did not appear to disturb the general joy of the occasion. Young and old, Europeans and natives, residents and tourists, seemed to enter thoroughly into the spirit of the day as the harbinger of a new state of things in this the Queen's Jubilee, year, and better days for us all. Great credit is due to the stewards and the committee generally, and more especially to Mr, Mather, the indefatigable secretary, for the spirited conduct of the day's entertainment. Mr. Johnson, the Government agent, gave every satisfaction in his capacity as judge, and all the events passed off exceedingly well. '
