There was a fair sprinkling of the '' game-of-chance" people, with their tables, expecting a harvest, bat they were promptly stopped by Constable Walker, of the district. Thames, Tuesday. Hugh Plummer, while tiring a hole, mining at Tapu, was injured about the face by the shot going off prematurely. He was brought to the Thames Hospital. It is hoped his injuries are not of a serious character. Paeroa, Tuesday. Mr. L. M. Grace, M.H.R., arrived, here this evening from Thames. He informs me that he will make an extended tour of his electorate, but will not address the electors jintil his return trip. [press association.] Napier, Tuesday. The South British loss by the fire on Saturday is only £3000, A boy aged 10 years, son of Daniel Cotton, a member of the Borough Council, was drowned this afternoon in » water hole at the Spit. Preparations are being made for laying the first block of the breakwater in January. Wellington, Tuesday. Some suburban land is still increasing in value. Township sections cut up by Sir W. Fitzherbert at Hutt Bold privately ,'*«t ovei £800 per acre. • Westport, Tuesday. Mr. Thomas Baillie was elected chairman of the Harbour Board to-day. Christchurch, Tuesday. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day Albert Payne was committed for trial on another charge of burglary. Joseph Rumble, now serving his term for a similar offence, was also committed for breaking into a house and stealing jewellery. The Chinese residents have subscribed £29 for the Hospital, in recognition of the kind treatment of the Chinese patients. Dunedin, Tuesday. The Compensation Court was occupied today in hearing a claim for £1600 brought against the Government for land taken for defence purposes at St. Clair. Cargill and Anderson were the nominal claimants, but Porter, an hotelkeeper, who had bought the place as a site for an hotel, was the re» claimant. Porter paid £480 for the land-. A verdict was given for £560. At the University Council meeting, Mr. F. A. Deb Gibbons was appointed to the Chair of Mathematics. He has occupied the position temporarily. The cricket match between Christ's College and Canterbury Carisbrook team was won by Carisbrook on the first innings. Carisbrook scored 175, Vallanoe putting together a well played 75. Collegians were all out for 93, and following on scored 52, without the loss of a wicket, Perry making 32 and Rolleaton 12.
