Sawkins, editor of the Evening News, for remarks in an artiole on * case of alleged indecent assault. At a meeting to-night of the members of the St. John's Anglican Church, it was decided to build at once a large brick and stone church to accommodate 1100 worshippers. £8000 has already been guaranteed towards the new church, which will be the third new one put up in Napier during the l»Bt two years. WELINGTON, Thursday. Most of the fish recently caught by the officers of the Hinemoa for the Colonial Exhibition have died, and it is probable the attempt to take New Zealand fish home alive will be abandoned. The cable steamer Sherard Osborne was not successful in picking up the White Bay end of the cabl* yesterday, and as the weather came on rough she returned to port, but will make another start to-morrow Probably the whole of the cable will be examined. KAIKOURA, Thursday. Mr. P. F. Wexland, a well-know: auctioneer of this place, died suddenly this morning. TIMARU, Thursday. In bankruptcy to-day a noteworthy cue occurred. The application of a bankrupt for an order of discbarge was opposed by the Assignee, becauie the sum of £10 costs due to the latter was not yet paid. The Assignee's counsel referred to the ruling of the Supreme Court Judge in support of hia contention. The District Judge emphatically declined to be guided by such an unwarrantable and wrong decision. Order granted. DUNEDIN, Thursday. Mr. J. C. Brown, M.H.R., was presented with 250 sovereigns last night, at a banquet held at Lawrence. The Hods. Messrs. Larnach and Tole were guests. The two Ministers to-day visited the claims in the neighbourhood, and returned to town in the evening. The Horticultural Society's Summer Show was very successful. The numbers of entries were not so large, but the exhibits were pronounced superior.
