THE GOLDFIELDS.

{from our own correspondent.] Thames, Monday. Cambria. At No. 3 level the manager has never ceased dri vin g into the hanging wall of the reef. Indeed the lode lies so flat that, for de« scriptive purposes, the drive may be said to be upon the dip of the reef. I suppose these workings— is a large cavern rather than a drive—extend between SO and 40 feet from the main drive. The manager— by the appearance of things, and the fact that the quartz had carried so —has for some time suspected that another body of quartz junctions with the other lode about here. His impression is confirmed, and 301bs. of specimens were obtained from this point, whioh he roughly guesses at 12 feet past the winze, below No. 3, this morning. The stranger may prove to be O'Sullivan's leader. These specimens are west of the break, and appear to be a fresh feature in the mine. Gold is seen pretty freely at No. 3 level, in driving towards the iTarwin.

Old Caledonian. The mine manager reports: The stepes at No. 3 level are looking very well. The stope east of winze is now up to the drive. The leader is from six to eight inches in thickness, and showing gold when broken down. 161bs. of specimens came to hand from it this week. There are two other stopes in progress on that side of of the winze. The leader in these is turning out good crushing dirt. There are three stopes going west of the winze, and the leader varies from five to nine inches. Gold is seen occasionally in each. lOlbs. of nice specimens came to hand from the second stope yesterday, and gold is still showing in the back of the stope. The whole of the dirt should show up well. The drive east of winze is now in readiness, and I would recommend letting it by contract, say 50ft. or 100 ft., as some of our best ground is still some distance ahead of the present face. The sinking of winze below No. 2 level under the old shot of gold has been commenced, and in breaking down the reef yesterday strong colours of gold were seen. The reef is fully three feet in thickness, and (ferrying good minerals, which look very promising as it is in a good locality. Devon".The crushing is thought to be worth about 2ozs. to the load. New Prince Impkrial. — The mine manager reports, August '22 : The footwall lead on the western side of the break at No. 5 level has been looking a little better this week, and a few pounds of picked stone have been got. Work on the No. 4 lead has been continued as usual, and payable dirt is still coming to hand. At the intermediate drive on the No. 1 reef, below No. 4 level, the work of beating out the leading stope and fixing the timbers in position has been in hand for the greater part of the week. Yesterday a start was made to sink the winze at the point where the gold was got. The reef at this place looks well, and I think there is a fair prospect of meeting with something good downwards. There will be, as I before stated, about SO feet to sink to No. 5 level. A large quantity of quartz has been obtained irom the back stupes here during the past fortnight, but I am sorry to say it has been shaping poor at the battery. Two men are stoping on No. 1 reef above No. 3 level, but there has been very little quartz taken down yet.

Hand of Friendship.—The mine manager reports, August '22 : The air- boxes are acting first-rate, carrying in a good strong current of fresh air to the face of the drive, so that the men are able to work now to much better advantage. The reef was broken down yesterday for a length of fully twelve feet. There was only two feet of the footwall portion taken, which iB looking a good deal better than previously, there being some nice kindly ribs of quartz in it, mixed with a good deal of soft floury stuff, which is always a good indication for gold ia this reef. The country is a little tighter, but still continues very favourable for gold.
