GAS.
vjaui TO THE EDITOR. Sik, —The numerous complaints against the Auckland Gas Company by your correspondents suggest the danger of allowing that monopoly to secure such a power as to perpetuate its hold over the oitizens of Auckland. Now it does seem strange that as that company pays 17 per cent, dividend, besides increasing its reserve, there should be no attempt to start another company, or that, as is done in many cities, the Corporation should erect gas works. They could borrow the money at 4$ per cent., and between that and the 20 per cent, cleared by the Auckland Gas Company, there is surely an ample margin for contingencies, and to reduce the price of gas to consumers as well as by surplus profits to reduce the general taxation of the ratepayers. I commend this suggestion to the City Fathers, but should they decline, I will be glad to take a considerable number of shares in a new gas company.—l am, &c., A Shareholder in the Present Auckland Gas Company.
