THE LATE EARTHQUAKES IN SPAIN.

Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlane have received the following letter from the Spanish consul in Christchurch :— G'hrUtchnrcb, New Zealand, February 27, 7.585. Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlane, Auckland ; Dear Sirs,— heartrending catastrophes in Spain arising from earthquakes have iieen productive of a heavy loss of life, b/ which many poor families have been Deprived of their bread-winners, and rendered houseless and homeless, maimed aid broken. The circumstances are such as must awaken the deepest sympathy in every Christian breast. The most large-hearted efforts are being made throughout Spain, England, America, and other countries, to raise funds in order, as far as pos ible, to. alleviate the distress. In my official capacity I have been communicated with to make an appeal to the kindly-disposed in New Zealand for assistance, and I shall -be exceeding obliged and happy to receive and forward any contributions which may be placed in my hands. I have taken the liberty of forwarding a subscription list, in the hope ' that you will endeavour tu your utmost to collect a handsome sum for this most worthy object.
