THE WATER SUPPLY.

At the meeting of the City Council last night, the following annual report on the water supply by Mr. J. A. Pond, Colonial Analyst, was read — Laboratory, Hobson-straet, Auckland, January 6, 1885. — His Worship the Mayor and Councillors, Auckland City Council.—Gentleman,— ln accordance with your wish, I have now completed my examination of the city waters, made during tho .welve months ending on October 30. I have taken one simple each month from the pumping well at the Western Springs, and another fro.-:i one of the city standpipes. The res at has been highly satisfactory as showing the excellent state of purity maintained by the water throughout the joar. The analy*es have been conducted in strict conformity with the methods adopted by the Society of Public Analyst*, England, and for the sake of comparison, and to still further illustrate the purity of the supply. I hare c&lcul- ted the results in accordance with Mr. Winner's formulae, which, though not adopted by the Society, is of some value for comparative purposes. The average of these numbers for the year is 22"75 for the pumping well, and \i'2l> for the stand-pipe samples. It will be seen that there Is a marked difference between the water taken from the pumping well and the water as delivered from the stand-pipes : this is chiefly owing to the turbidity at the well, in consequence of the large and rapid flow of water to the pumps. Taking the water as delivered to the consumers at 14*25. the result places 11 fourth on the list of 69 public water supplies of England for 1881. ' o well does 'he water supplied from the stand-pipes compare with those supplied by the public water companies in England, that I have no hesitation in classing the Auckland water supply as water of exceptional purity."— have, &c, J. A. Pond, Colonial Analyst.
