THE GOLDFIELDS.
[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Thames, Friday evening. Rooky Point.—One hundred and twentyfive loads quartz yielded 53ozs. of gold. The leader looks well over head, and there are 200 to 300 feet of backs. The face of the drive is also promising. Deep Level Cross—lt has been decided to suspend operations at the 640-feet level, but resume driving seaward at the 400-feet level on the Caledonian reef ; also to work on the promising leaders cut by the Kuranui Company from the Albion shaft. Dart.—A trial parcel in the Alfred leader, in which no gold was seen, yielded ljoz. to the load. A stope will be carried along, and a further test made. .Elephant Ore Stamp. —A trial, of two hours, at between 160 and 170 blows of each stamper per minute, crushed a ton of quartz, or equivalent to 12 tons in twenty-four hours. It is. estimated that the motive power was about three-horse. It was not driven full speed, as the foundation is bad. The gratings were' 196 holes to the square inch. A trial with finer gratings is to be made to-morrow.
