THE MANUKAU HARBOUR.
TO THE EDITOB. " Sib, —In reply to your correspondent, Mr. . James J. Sheldrick, I beg to Btate that my ] reason for wishing to see the ManukaaHarbour under the control of the Auckland Harbour Board instead .of a local Board is that the former, is a powerful and wealthy body, which has large and valuable endowments, on the. security of which file sum necessary to construct the Waitemata-Mann-kau canal could be raised ; whereas a local Board would, for many years, be impecunious, - If this large and important work ia to be " undertaken, it must be by a powerful and wealthy body which has control over both harbours. I do not suppose that a local' Board, if formed, would object to the formation of the canal, but, from want of funds, it' could do nothing to assist in carrying out . the project.' I quite sympathise with the Onehunga people in their objection, to the present excessive wharfage dues, but it is - my opinion, and the opinion of men'better qualified than I to judge'of the matter, that the best and speediest way to get their grievances redressed would be to have the Manukau Harbour placed under the control " of the Auokland Harbour Board.—l am, &o, a William Rattrat. Symondß-street, May 13.
