FIRE IN A VENUE-ROAD, PARNELL.
Shortly before four o'olock yesterday morning a fire broke out in Avenue-road, Parnell, in the stables (belongingy to Mr. James Philson, of the firm' of Hunter and Nolan. The alarm had scarcely sounded when Air. Littlejohn was at. the Fire Brigade Station and had everything in readiness for a turn .out. Ho was soon.,joined by Mr. Fowler and others, and a start was made for the scene of the "fire," but'by the time they reached it the building was a mass of flames. Meanwhile, ■ however, Walter' Breach (Mr, Philson's groom), who slept on the premises, had got the horßes out, and also the buggies and traps, but the harness-room being olose to the main seat of the fire, the harness was lost. The stables were burnt to the ground. Breach is unable to give any intelligible account of the origin of the-fire. i. -He Btated that he returned from Newmarket about midnight, and went to bed, but cannot recolleot whether he extinguished the lamp whioh he used. IHe was awakened by a feeling of 'suffocation,' and at once gave the alarm to Mr. Philson. The building was insured for £70 in the New Zealand Insurance Office.
