IS AUCKLAND ASLEEP ?

TO THE EDITOB. Sie, —The above question may well be asked, for her citizens, with an apathy apparently past finding out, wonderful exceedingly is it, mournful and most -painful, for they make no sign nor raise the deprecating hand to stay the infliction about to be perpetrated on their city—a blot which will last for all time if immediate action is not taken, who does not breathe freer air? who does innately feel " this plot of land should never be built upon again," as they round the open spacestretchingfromShortland to Fort-streei, as now demolished of the buildings which lately covered the spot ? Does not everyone, feel it would be an everlasting disgrace that this one only now possible little square in onr ! city should not be saved to it ? Have our city councillors no bowels of compassion? Can they not forego the small item of income which this ground rent is to yield, and beautify our city for ever? In the name of all that is patriotic, loyal, artistic—raise the cry, that the impending vandalism shall not fall upon us, and call upon the citizens by a monster petition to speak to the Council and call upon it to undo this great wrong, and bo sanction the non-receipt of income which no true citizen but will rejoce shall never swell the coffers of their city.—l am, &c., Anti-Goth.
