CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

The ordinary weekly meeting of the committee was held yesterday evening in the library of Wellesley-street School. Present: Messrs. Carr (Chairman), Offer, Warburton, Thwaites, Ryan, Aley, and the Secretary. School Age.—Replies were received from several country schools agreeing with the circular of the committee re "School Age." Removal op Teachers.—The Chairman said that a letter had been received from the Board announcing the removal of Miss E. Burton from Nelson-street to Pukekohe j West.—Mr. Offer objected to frequent removal of teachers. Applications and appointments should come through the Board. He would ba prepared to move that a letter be sent to the Board to that effect.—Mr. Ryan thought some action should be taken to strenethen the hands of Mr. Buckland.— Mr. Thwaites thought that a stronger representation than Mr. Offer proposed should be made to the Board. At this season of the year, the standard examinations being so near at hand, the removal of a teacher was an injury to fany school.—Mr. Offer might move a resolution to the effect, " That the committee cannot under any circumstances sanction the removal of a teacher at this season of the year, owing to the close proximity of the standard examinations."— Mr. Offer: I am willing to adopt Mr, Thwaites's suggestion. I shall withdraw my resolution.—The Chairman thought the Inspector was not responsible for the vacancy at Pukekohe West. Miss Burton was in feeble health, and wished to be removed to the country.—Mr. Thwaites said she had not applied to the committee to be removed. —The Chairman : I should not be disposed | from any selfish consideration to object to the ladyhaviugachange for the sakeof herhealth. —Mr. Aley thought thequestion was not as to the lady's health, but as to the position and authority of the committee in these matters. If the lady had applied to the committee there would probably no objection.—Mr. Ryan and Mr. Warburton thought objection should be waived in this case.—The Chairman moved an amendment, "That a letter be sent to the Board informing them that the committee regret that it has been found necessary to move Mies Burton at this time of the year, but in this case the committee will not interfere with the arrangements of the Board ; and that upon all future removals this committee should be consulted." Mr. Offer withdrew the motion, as suggested by Mr. Thwaites, and the Chairman's amendment becoming a substantive resolution, was put and carried.
