VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

EXAMINATION OF OFFICERS. Tiik monthly inspection parade of the Naval Brigade was held lust night. There was an excellent attendance of fifty-fonr, all told. Two were absent and unaccouted for, and six abaunt on leave—members who are at sea. Captain Le .'Roy was in command, and his officers, Lieutenant Parker and Sub-Lieu-tenant Smith, were present. Major Shepherd, the officer commanding the district, was inspecting officer. Advantage was taken of thu parade to hold the examination of four sab-lieutenants—Smith, Navals ; Self, Victoria; Hitchens, No. 3, and Flynu, Hobson's. This proved arduoun work for the company, as there were four officers placed successively in command to put them through a somewhat heavy drill. At one time there was a little murmuring, the men, no doubt, get ting tirecl, and perhaps a little indifferent; bui the spirit of insubordination, if such it should be called, was quidkly quenched, anil in the face of the excellent manner in which orders were obeyed and movements executed, it is not necessary to deal with it. Such, however, should no t oocur more than once. Insubordination on parade is heavily dealt with under the regulations, and the Mutiny Act is a dangerous Act to deal with. The inspecting officers were Major Shepherd, Captain Leßoy, and Captain. Mahon. The officers to be examined rook over the company in the order named. The course of drill for each commenced with taking over the company on first falling in, forming front and rear wheeling on the halt, forming right-about from the halt and oil the move, and skirmishing drill. Ench of the officers under inspection displayed a good knowledge of the orders, and how they should be carried out. At the close, Major Shepherd, on behalf of the Inspecting Board, briefly expressed his satisfaction with the examination so far, and intimated that there were certain theoretic questions which would be famished to them tci be answered.
