A WAR CORRESPONDENT.

During the entire Egyptian campaign (says Mr. Labouchere) I have been in a state of wonderment at the miraculous manner in which the life of the Times correspondent has been preserved to us. According to his telegrams, he has lived like a salamander in tire. If there has been an engagement, round shot, shrapnel, shells, and bullets have tilled the air around him, and yet he has not once been hit. But he is modest withal, for he ouly lets us know this in a sort of incidental fashiou. If he meets someone on the battlefield, that someone is "gallantly" riding in the midst of a deadly fire ; if he goes to the front he withdraws after the air is so darkened by projectiles that he is unable to jot down his valuable notes. And then what a kind man he is ! No sooner is the fight over than he is amongst the soldiers with a brandy-flask to aid and succour the wounded. He is, too, as clever as be is brave. When giving an account of the mistaken manoeuvres of the Egyptians, he notunfreijuently explains what Napoleon would have done under the circumstances. Altogether, judging him by his own account of himself, a man so brave, so clever, aud so pood, never before lived, aud we ought to be unfeiguedly grateful that, notwithstandingthe reckless manner in which he has risked his charmed existence, he still remains amongst us, sound in wind and limb, to instruct us in war, to award praise and blame to our soldiers, and to thrill us with admiration of a courage whioh seems almost ■superhuman.
