"Afteb deducting the expenses of the late prosecution for illicit liisallation, one-half of the fines inflicted (£400) will be divided among those who were instrumental in obtaining a conviction. The Premier will leave for Auckland about the end of next week to upend the Christmas with his family. At the Appeal Court to-day leave wae granted to appeal to the Privy Council in the case of Connor v. McKay (Duniidin).
CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The action of the Christchurch and Napier shareholders of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company, in opposing the proposed sub-lettiug of a considerable portion of the company's land at Gisborne, appears likely to have the effect of raising up a widespread opposition to the proposal. Mr. W. Wilson left for the North to-day, pledjed to oppose the letting, and armed with proxies representing 12,000 shares. It is stated that even in Gisborne itself there is a strong feeling against parting with any of the company's property.
At the inquest on the body of a snrveyor, founJ with his throat cut, on a road near Leestoii, a vc-rdiet was returned of "Suicide ring aud fit of temporary insanity." At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Robert EwiDg was committed for trial on a charge of attempted arson. It appears that he quarrelled with his wife, and piling all his furniture in a heap set fire to it, but the neighbours extinguished the flames before the house was much damaged. The Akaroa yachtsmen are dissatisfied with the regulations which prevents yachts under 10 tons competing at the regatta.
DUKE DIN, Friday. The Duni-din Horticultural Society's Show took place to-day, but was not a great success, owing to the backwardness of the season, and lack of support by professional gardeners.
The police recently seized fully a dozen samples of milk from the milkmen engaged in supplying the citizens of Dunedin and suburbs. These were submitted to Professor Black, and the report of the analysis was so far satisfactory that no prosecutions will be made against tk-e vendors of supplying milk diluted with water.
The Tuapeka County Council has an overdraft of £5000, and serious thoughts are entertained of stopping .ill work for two or three months. A proposal is made to divide the county, by making Cheviot a separate connty.
