LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.

[by telkgkaph.—own correspondent..] Wellington, Friday. PRISON MANAGEMENT.

Referring to the notorious return ot prison punishments, which has excited such a remarkable sensation, I may mention that a further return has been prepared, which shews that the rest of the colony had, duriug the period in question, a daily average number of prisoners of 534, and extra detentions beyond the term of the origiual sentences, 07. Dunedin, with a daily average of only 9S prisoners had no fewer than 163, the excess of extra imprisonments in Duuediu, as compared with the rest of the colony, being l">50 per cent. Had the excess of imprisonments in the rest of the colony been at the same rate as Dunedin they would have amounted to SSS instead of only 57.

THE WELLINGTON HOSPITAL. I have just learned that thn appointment of a resident surgeon to the Wellington Hospital, for which applications were received from all parts of the colony, has been conferred this evening upon Dr. Hammond of Fimaru, whose credentials and testimonials are said to be of a remarkably good character. It is rumoured that Mrs. Ueruard Moore, the well-known lady lecturer on nursing, is likely to be appointed chief matron at the head of a strong and select nursing statf, so as to make it a sort of training centre for hospital nurses. MR. BRYCE'S MOVEMENTS. Mr. Bryce comes down from the North overland by way of Taupo and Murimotu, where he will endeavour to eil'ect some satisfactory settlement of the Murimotu dispute. He then goes to Wauganui to spend Christmas aud New Year with his family. THE PREMIER. The Premier leaves Wellington by the Rotomahana on Friday next for Auckland. SIR WM. JERYGIS. I understand that the new Governor, Sir Wni. Jervois, at first contemplated coming by way of the Bluff, arriving about the loth of January, but it was considered more convenient that lie should come direct to the scat of Government, and be sworn in at once. Accordingly, he has arranged to travel from Sydney by the s.s. Wakatipu, ar.d will probably arrive about the 18th proximo.
