THE EX-EMPRESS EUGENIE'S NEW RESIDENCE.
From a private correspondent we learn that during the absence of the Empress from England a course of extensive alterations and additions are being carried out at the mansion which the Empress has purchased at Farnboroiigh, Hants. This property, which the Empress acquired from the. family of the late well-known publisher, Mr. Longman, and which she intends t" ma.k« her" permanent residence so soon as the necessary elaborations are completed, is situ.'.ted about three and a-half miles from Aldcrshot, aud within easy distance of Farnboroiigh station. Some idea of the magnitude of the work in progress and style of in.insion may be gleaned from the fact that £100,000 is quoted'as the least possible cost up to the time of taking possession, and it is probable that other additions may yet be made. An important proposition was .submitted a few days back on behalf of the local vestry, affecting an ancient right-of-way across one portion of the estate. It appears that an old highway penetrates the ground acquired by the Empress, which she is desirous of making private, and the proposal was that in lien of this highway a new road should be formed, wider and more convenient for the inhabitants, and be given to the vestry. Captain Elliott and Mr. George Lilly white submitted a resolution that the proposal be agreed to, and the subsequent voting of the vestry conceded the point. It may be mentioned here that the late Empress .still maintains her intention of having a magnificent mausoleum erected in which to deposit the remains of herhusband and son.—Buildiug Times.
