AUCKLAND SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

♦— THE fortnightly meetingof the Auckland School C nnmittee was held at the Nelson-street schoul Present: Messrs. Schmidt (chairman), YVaymouth, McHnster, and Thwaite*.

Correspondence. — The fallowing letters wore rend by the secretary : From tho Board of E lucation to the effect that the Boird request that small rnpiirs to the City Schools be undertaken by the committee and charged primarily against the school fund ; if that fund is iHsufficieut, the question of payment by the Board c*u be subsequently considered.—Frem the Board, enolosiuß copy of a letter from Mr. Uislop. to the effect that the euro of £5000 voted by tho General Assembly is stated to be for purchase of reoreation grounds for the public schools, and tho Board's application as regards Beres-ford-street, Nelson-street, and the Normal schools is for levelling, fencing, and draining echool sites already acquired. This speci-.il vote for purchase of school grounds cannot be used for levelling, fencing, etc., lands already fenced for school purposes.—With reference to Mr. Hislop'a letter, Mr. Rice remarked, "A» regards the application for a grant to acquire the two acres of land (Improvement Trusi.) at the bacic of the Wellealey-street School, the Board lisb represented to the Government that the objection raised by Mr. Hidlop'a letter does not apply, tho object being to acquire the land as a playground, for which at prudent it is not available."—From the Soard acatinx that the Education Department • h.is appointed the Traiuing Collage, Wellesley-street, as tho place for holding the annutl examination of teachers duriug the week beginning Monday, 23rd instant. Also, that as a considerable number of the assistant teachers are candidates for examination, the Board suggests it may be advisable to defer the re-opening of the city fchools until after the examination is ended.—From the Board, to the effect that the Board is of opinion that Mr. C. H. Nicholson, assistant-master at the Wellesley-street School, should have an extension of leave of absence until the end of February, to enable him to complete his recovery, aud to enable him to visit other town schools. The Board proposes, us a temporary arrangement, t'> appoint .Mr. Alfred Septimus Webber, certificated teacher (D 4). as an assistant in the school. Mr. Webber has been employed for some time puet as aesintiint-masteratthe Waio-Kuraka School, Thames, and has resigned that position in order to come to Auckland.

iIEPAIUS TO BBBESfOKD STKUKT SCHOOI On the motion of Mr. J. Waymouth, secouded by Mr. Thwaitos.it was resolved, " That a oammunicifion be sent to the Board thiit the concluding clause of the Eo.ird's letter on this subject was not definite enough to warrant the oommittoe in undertaking tho expeDso, nud hoping that the Board will be kind enough to do the work without delay, as tho repairs are much required."

Plat-grounds.—This matter was rolegnted to the incoming committee.

EOLIDATS.—On the motion of Mr. Waymouth, seconded by Mr. .McMaster, it whs resolved to write to tho Board directing atteution to a letter written by the committee to the Board, ou tho 20th of January last, requesting that representations should be mado by the Board to tho proper quarter, asking that tho examination of teachers should be held during the last week of the holidays, and informing the Eoard that the holidays had been extended until January 30, the schools reopening on the

Chairman of Committee.— Mr. Schmidt whs appointed actins-ohairman in tho absence of Mr. Gorrie.

Leavk or Absence.—lt was resolved to grant to Mr. Nicholson leare of absence should he apply to the committee for it in tho regular manner; the committee would then offer no objection to the proposed appointment of Mr. Webber in his stead.

A voto of thanks to Mr. Gorrie terminated tho proceedings of this, the list for the transaction of business, of the present committee.
