John Wilson was charged at the Resident ' Magistrate's Court to-day with committing ' a breach of the Gaming and Lotteries Act' by holding sweeps on the racecourse. The police applied for the infliction of a nominal * penalty only, as the man was poor. It was proved that the defendant had persisted in drawing the sweeps after having b*ta cautioned by the police. The counsel for the defendant offered no evidence, but characterised the Act as iniquitous. It had legalised the totalisator, but debarred the people from holding a harmless half-crown sweep. The Magistrate, in consideration of the circumstances, inflicted a nominal penalty of ss, without costs. DUNEDHf, Tuesday. The Star states that the English cricketers have definitively decided not to play at Invercargill. The Kaitangata and Shag Point Coal Company have had tenders accepted for the supply of coal to the railways in Dunedin. INViSRC ARGILL, Tuesday. The half-yearly sitting of the Supreme Court opened to-day. Thomas Kennedy, for stealing Masonic jewellery to the total value of £20, was sentenced to six months' hard labour.
