MURDERS AND FIGHTING IN NEW BRITAIN.
The following respecting late news from New Britain, is taken from the Sydney Morning Herald of July 27 :—lntelligence has been received from the South Sea Islands by H.M.S. Emerald that Mr. Kleimschmidt, a German naturalist, was murdered some time ago in New Britain. It afterwards transpired that the victim of this atrocity had been mistaken for the Hon. Mr. Lyttelton, with whom the natives had had several quarrels regarding the ownership of certain lands. Eventually they fell upon Mr. Lyttelton and murdered him. A report of the matter reached Jaluit (Marshall's Group) by Hsrnshine's -German steamer Pacific, on June 18, but only very brief particulars appear to have been communicated to the .Emerald. The murder took place fourteen days prior to the Pacific's arrival. The natives of New Britain mado a hostile demonstration against the whites and others who are resident there. The lattor believing their lives to be in danger made common cause against tho islanders, and an attack on them resulted in the killing of about 50. No whites were killed. The Deputy-Com-missioner, Mr. Romilly, has since visited New Britain in H.M. achooner,Beagle, and justified the proceedings of the whites. H.M.S. it is stated by native report, also appeared on tho scene, and hanged three natives for the murder of Mr. Lyttelton. •
