THE DETACHED SQUADRON.

We mako the following extracts from our files of Sydney papers received by the Arawata :—

About noon on the 22nd July, Rear-Admiral the Earl of Clanwilliam was seized with a fainting fit, which rendered him unconscious for nearly three hours. Lord Clanwilliam, with some of the other officers of the squadron, was being photographed when the attack came on. The medical officers of the Inconstant would not allow His Lordship to speak on Friday night and Saturday morning, so precarious was his condition ; and, naturally enough, the Inconstant has been ever since Friday afternoon rigorously closed to visitors. At noon on Saturday the surgeons of all the men-of-war in port held a consultation as to the state of Lord Clanwilliam's health, and the result was that at 1.30 p.m. the signal was made from tho Inconstant to the other vessels of the squadron that the start would not be made at 3 p.m., as originally intended. The Herald of the 26th states:—"lt is gratifying to learn that the state of Admiral Lord Clanwilliam's health is steadily improving, and that there is every probability of his being out of danger. Sir Arthur Kennedy and Miss Kennedy— Lord Clanwilliam's father-in-law and sister-in-law —are coming from Brisbane by theEgmont to visit him before the squadron leaves." The same paper, in its issue of the 27th, ; says :—" Rear-Admiral the Earl of Clanwilliam has made such progress towards recovery that yesterday afternoon lie was pronounced by his medical advisers out of danger, and a signal to that effect was made from the Inconstant to the other vessels of the squadron, while a satisfactory bulletin was sent to Government House. It is likely enough that in a few days Lord Clanwilliam will resume active duty. His father-in-law, Sir Arthur Kennedy, Governor of Queensland, will probably arrive here with Miss Kennedy, by the Egmont, to-day, and Miss Kennedy will go onboard the Inconstant to nurse the Earl, while Sir Arthur will be a guest at Government House. We are informed that a cablegram has been received from the Admiralty in answer to one sent from here, and that it is to the effect that the squadron is to await further instructions. ,
