AUSTRALIANS V. FIFTEEN OF CANTERBURY.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Chkistchurcti, Tuesday. Another glorious day was vouchsafed to the cricketers, and at ten minutes past 12 there was a good number present to watch the final struggle of the Canterbury men. Ollivier and Watson began the batting, SpofForth and Palmer again having chare;* of the bowling. Ollivier hit the second ball to leg for 4 and a leg bye and a leg hit for 1, and Watson made 6 off the following over. Watson might easily have run 2 for his hit, but the memory of the disaster in the first innings was too strong. Watson cut his first ball from Palmer for 3 and hit him pluckily for a couple, but Spofforth sending an extra fast one levelled Ollivier's stumps. 1—5—12. Leach took the retiring batsman's place, and snicked the first ball in the slips for a couple. A succession of maidens followed, broken only by an occasional single to Watson. The latter had only just completed his double figures when he left his captain. 2—10—19. Secretan was received, with cheers, for naturally on , him the chief hopes of his side rested, j They were ruthlessly scattered by his playing the second ball into Boyle's hands. ; A fine piece of fielding by Murdoch prevented a hard drive of Hartland's from scoring ' otherwise a certain 4, but the batsman ; brought 40 up next ball by hitting Spofforth L to square for 3. Leach, who had been in three-quarters of an hour for 6, then fell a I victim to Spofforth, one of whose extrai ordinary twisters levelled his leg stump.— 4—6—42. Corfe became Hartland's associate, and was saluted with three stinging ; balls from the "demon." Corfe playing s forward to his first ball from the Melbourne man, got out of his crease and gave Blackham t a chance which he did not neglect.— r 5—4 —51. Reeves was Corfe's successor. The score stood at 75, when lunch adjourn--5 ment took place. The game was resumed 1 punctually at 3 o'clock, by which time there J 3 were nearly as many people present as on 1 Saturday. The third ball of Spofforth's over proved unlucky to Hartland, as he cut it into e Jarvis'hands and retired. 9—26 —75. Fowler • scored well. He drove the " demon" into the | ladies' reserve, but the veteran's chance of 8 ! winning the trophy was spoiled next over, LS for in cutting Palmer he gave point a chance, 1 which Spofforth immediately snapped up. 3 11—24—115. Fowler's runs were made in his well-known vigorous style, chiefly by drives.
The Canterbury team made 90 in their first innings and 134 in the second innings— 224. The Australians, first innings, 323. The following were the scores : — FIFTEEN OF CANTERBURY —.SECOND INNINGS.
