OBITUARY.
In obituary column will be found lect 'd.id the decease of two old settlers, who, strangely enough, have been each over a punter of a century in the province, died svithio.few hours of each other, at nearly the same age, and were laid in their last resting place on the same day. The first is Mr. -JVseph Tapper, for many years in the employ of the Harbour Board, and who passed away on Christmas Day, after a lengthy illue s, leaving a widow and numerous family. He was one i f the oldest members of the Fountain of Friendship Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.[J. The other citizen whose death we record is >Ir. John Lsech, the well-known carver and gilder, of Short-land-street. He died on Boxing Day, after an i!lae3s of three months' duration, of decline. For many years Mr. Leech" was a useful member of the Choral Society. He leaves a widow and three sons and three daughters.
We have to announce the death o£ Mr. George Jennings, late of 2*eleon-street, Auckland. He was well known here as an ardent admirer of athletic sports, and frequently competed. It appears that he was one of the competitors in the athletic sports at Masterton on Boxing Day, and after winning the quarter-milo race he dropped down dea-C He was a member of Court Zealandia, A. OF." The death is announced of Surgeon-Major Wilton Everet. He served throughout the - v ew Zealand campaign of IS6I-63 (medal and clasp), and was promoted surgeon in 1573, surgeon-major in IS7S. and only returned from a tcur of service in India early this year. Mr. Everet was 43 years of age at the time of his decease, and leaves a widow and young family to mourn their less. • F h e funeral of Mr 3. Avey,- the respected wife of Mr. Avey, of the Park Hotel, took place on 23rd December, aiul the esteem in which she was held was manifested by the very lar s e attendance. The members of the l'ouutain of Friendship Lodge, 1'.0.0.F the .licensed Victuallers' Association, and' the German Society, were largely represented. Caroline Taiaroa, daughter of Ngatata, and elder sister to the Hon. Wi Tako died at Te Aro pa recently. The 'ieceaeed was the wife of Taiaroa, father of the Hod fl. K. Taiaroa, M.H.K* She had been suEfering from cancer iu Otago, and came up to Wellington for medical treatments.
