WAIPU. The Rev. Frank Gould preached in the Upper Schoolroom on Sunday. The congregation was large, and the collection made at the close of the service fair.
Mr. K. McDonald has, against his wish, withdrawn hia offer of a site for an Episcopalian Church. A site of lour acres has been obtained from Mr. Hugh Fraser, adjoining the Upper school, for a Church of England parsonage.
A subscription is being made to collect funds to aink for coal at the Ruakaka, on Mr. Fleet's farm. Dr. Hector has spoken favourably, of the specimens of shale, &c , forwarded to him, Mr. Lucas gave a lectnrc on "Temperance," in the Upper School-room, on Wednesday. The subject did not seem to take, as the audience consisted of seven men, and the same number of children. The lecture, which was a very good one, was much better attended in the central school. He also' gave an entertainment entitled, "Gold, Love, and Marriage, &c," which wa3 well appreciated. Mr. Hugh Fraser has turned his attention to cheese-making, and is turning out weekly a considerable quantity of the article, for which he finds a ready sale, his cheese being first-rate. We have had four days of rather heavy rain. Some of the hay will suffer, but the pasture and standing crops look splendidly. A petition is being Bigaed to hare a Licensing Bench for Waipu. If granted Mr. Bonface will have no chance of commencing business in the district. Another neighbouring district proposes making a similar application.—[Own Correspondent, December 17.]
