ORURU CENTRAL SCHOOL QUESTION.

A meeting was held at Oruru on the sth inst., to consider the best means of carrying ont the terms of a resolution passed at the last annual school meeting of that district. Mr. W. Garton occupied the chair. The Chairman said, at the last annual meeting a resolution was passed, to the effect that it was advisable that a central school should be established, where the children at either end of the valley might attend, in lieu of the two half-time schools of Upper and Lower Oruru, which appeared to satisfy no one. He was then requested to write to Mr. White, lato R.M., asking him to sell or lease a small piece of land for a site. He had written, but the reply was unfavourable. He had then applied to Mr. Lust, one of the trustees of the estate of the late Captiin Butler, for a lease of a portion of Te Kumiti, adjoining Mr. White's boundary, and he had received a very kind reply, informing him that Mrs. Butler and family were most willing to meet the wishes of the settlers. Both letters were read, and some surprise expressed that Mr. White, owning such an area of the central valley, should evade so moderate a request of his late neighbours. It was affirmed that the present tenant would bo only too glad to give his consent, on «x:count of his own children. After some desultory conversation, the following resolution was passed unanimously :—" That the school committee accept the proposed site, and that the chairman, in writing to Mrs. Butler, convey the grateful thanks of this meeting for the prompt and liberal manner in which their request had been met by her and her family."—[A Correspondent, July 7.]
