He determined to ;op it. On nearing the fatal apot one night, 3 sat silent at the throttle, and, telling his reman to be sure and follow him if the train imped the track, he waited the result, he train was banked, as usual; and jump- j ig into the darkness, the engineer and his , eutenant captured the culprit in a neigh- , During cornfield. The enraged passengers anted to lynch the villain on the spot, but ! le engineer, a stern, determined man, pre- J snted it, remarking that he would take ' large of him, and the fellow was placed on ie engine, under guard of the fireman. The '■ •ain being righted, was soon speeding on it* ay, as though nothing had happened. 1 fhile bowling abng a smooth piece of track, ie engineer beckoned the fireman to stand n one side. The latter did so, and the □gineer picked up a round stick of wood ad struck the criminal a stunning blow on ie head He then caught the quivering >rra of the poor wretch, and, opening the lmace-door, threw it into the hot, seethin ame. The door was shut, the train rattled long, and never, until the engineer con;S9ed the act upon his deathbed, was it scertained what had been the fate of the end who had been in the habit of throwing lie train off the track.
