CITY WEST ELECTION : A CONTRAST.
TO THE EDITOR. Sri?, —Elections now-a-days'are poor affairs. I was dreaming last night of the Whitakcr ami Campbell elections in 1555, compared to which your new-fanqlcd ballot-box plan is cold crowdie. This was, a bit of my dream:— Oh. for an hnnr of Fctcr Grnce ! Or Lorain to bruise tho face i)i tho opposing crow. Or A. cljio stiff his placo to keep Wucic round tho < ourt-hou'.e hundreds sweep, And mnko tlieir eyelids bluo ! In vain ; hold Naughton roscuo brings, And right and left tho voters flings, And leaves the poll-door free. "Horpros nor cons could entrancp stop, Though stick and fist, in rapid whop, Left noses bathed.iu goro, "Wlulo tho fttern Naughton, dauntless still, Maintained his post by force and will Till tho poll closed at four. Bravo Naughton ! Florid in face, of manly form, Iu duty strict, hut heart aye warm, Auckland remembers thee. —I am, &c., X.
