ARREST OF R. J. DEBENEY FOR EMBEZZLEMENT.
Osr Saturday last, about 5 o'clock, Detective Jeffrey arrested a young man named R. J. Debeney, who had been a clerk in the land Transfer Office, Auckland, for embezzling Government moneys to the amount, it is said, of £150. A " fe*r days ago suspicion fellupon Debeney that he was a defaulter, and he was consequently suspended, pending an examination nf his accounts,, which haa been done—the resnlt being that he is believed to have appropriated to his own «BeJ at sundry times, about £150. At 1 o'clock on Saturday afternoon the head of the del partment (Mr. Theb.. Kissling) laid information against Debeney,, and a warrant for hie apprehension was issued. The warrant was placed in ,, the hands of Detective Jeffrey; who instantly proceeded - to execute it: Not finding Debeney at his usual place of residence, and hearing that he was missing, he (Detective Jeffrey) suspected that he had made up his mind to abscond, ' and that he might have arranged to make his' exit by the barque Adela, bound for Newoaatle, he went on board that vessel, which way lying in the stream, awaiting a favourable wind for departure, and there I discovered the man he wanted, and arrested : him. Debeney had paid his passage and had ' his luggage on board. He was taken to the lock up, and will be brought before the Police Court this morning. Debeney, who ia '. an Englishman, arrived here about two years ago, by the Countess of Kintore, and some time afterwards he received an appointi ment as clerk in the Land Transfer Office. Previous to this, and immediately after his advent into Auckland, he was employed as a clerk in the office of Messrs. Jackson aria ! Russell. ■ -
