The new engine at the Union Beach is working splendidly. The water caused by the stoppage of the old engine, while this one was being connected, is out of the mine. More hands will be put on, and the mine worked in all its parts. Shares could not be bought here to-day for SOs. The Kapanga is lowering the water rapidly in the mine. Business generally is very quiet indeed, but hopes are entertained of a revival. It is with the greatest satisfaction I have to report that a quantity of rich specimens was taken from the Bismarck to-day. The haul has inceased the confidence entertained as to the value of the mine. What has been taken is merely looked upon as an indication of many more such specimens to be obtained. It is. mentioned as a matter of regret that the manager has not been authorised to publish a written report for the benefit of the sharehlders. It would greatly tend to establish confidence. 1 have just seen the manager of the Tokatea, -who has just arrived from the mine. He states that there is nothing worth reporting beyond the fact that gold is still being obtained in the Van level. Preparations are being made for a tunnel in the low level, and tenders will be shortly called for the work. The Union Beach will commence crushing to-morrow. A small quantity of specimens was obtained from the west end of the intermediate level. The new engine is working splendidly.' Wellington, Thursday.

Accounts of the crops, from all parts of the province, give. promise of an nnusally large yield per acre. The yield will be greater than last year. Much land has been laid down in grass for sheep farming, but this is more than counterbalanced by the immense number of acres of newland brought under cultivation. There is a decided preponderance of oats ; very little barley. Oats will average throughout the provinces 3G bushels per acre ; wheat, 30; barley, 2.5. The Eire Brigade Committee, influenced by tho experience gained at the late fire, have recommended the City Council to make largely-iucrcascd provision for water-sup-ply.
