The Rowena will leave again for the North this afternoon. The topsail schooner Dauntless, 72 tons, Captain Millar, arrived in harbour on Saturday afternoon from Noumea, New Caledonia. Captain Millar reports leaving Auckland for New Caledonia on the Ist October. Had variable winds along the coast. Thence to Noumea westerly and southerly winds and fine weithcr. Arrived at Noumea on the ICtb, and left again on the- 22nd. Had S.S.E. winds till tho ~Sth, when the wind veered to the N.E. Passed tho Three Kings at 4 p.m. on tho 29th, and the North Cape at 10 p.m. same day. Met the s.s. Nero at G a.m. on tho 30th, off the Cavalli Islands, and arrived in harbour as al)OV0 - « , • « X, , , . , The schooner Papua, Captain Sutherland, arrived in harbour early on Saturday morning from Rarotougn, with a cargo of produce. Slio left Auckland on the 9th August last, and arrived at Rarotonga on the 2nd September, after a severe passage. Crnised about the Hcrvey Group a month and ten days taking in cargo; sailed on the 13th, and experienced light winds and calms throughout the passage. Sighted Cape Brett on the 29th October. Captain Sutherland reports having, on tho 2-ltli Octobcr, sighted a steamer, in latitude 25.4G S. and longitude 17C.5GE., bound to the northward. This was probably the Star of the South, which Ivift hero tor Levuka on the 20tli October.

The barque Albicn, Captain Kelly, belonging to the Auckland "Whaling Company, returned to port on Saturday morning with 130 barrels of oil on board, and being the produce of four small whales. She left Auckland on the 23rd June; touched at Norfolk Island for hands on the 4tli July, but could not procure any, having no opportunity of communicating with the shore. Proceeded to Savage Island, where six men were shipped. Arrived at Tongatabu on the 2Gth July, having experienced up to this time light winds and fine weather. Arrived at Nemuka, one of the Hapai Islands, on the 31st July. Captain Kelly went on shore and took a native pilot on board, to take the vessel to an anchorage. Whilst so doing, she struck several times on a sunken reef, having about two fathoms water over it. She soon drifted into deep water, and anchored in thirty fathoms. By the accidont a portion of her false kefl was knockod away and the rudder unhung. The latter was shipped next day. No further damage was done. Romaincd humpbacking near Nemuka for two months, six more hands being shipped at the island during the vessel's stay. Tho chief oflicer, -Mr, Core:*, was taken sick, and remained a fortnight on shore to recruit his health. Four whales were taken, but two were lost, one through sinking and the other abandoned in consequence of the sharks having stripped off the blubber. A number of whales were chased, but lost throw?li the incompetency of some of the hands. On the 2nd October six Savage Islanders and a seaman named Chaso deserted. Sailed for Axtclcland on the sth October. Encountered a strong southerly gale on the 2Cti» October, in lat. 35 deg. 2 ruin. S., and long. 17G deg. 50 min. E., lasting eighteen hours, during which the chip was hote-to. Sighted Alderman's Island on the 2Sth. Westerly winds and fine weather down the coast. Tho takings are as follow: August 2Sth, humpback whale, 50 barrels; September 3rd, cow and calf, 50 barrels; September 21st, humpback bull, 20 barrels.

ARRIVAL OF TIT ft MISSION SCHOONER SOUTHERN CROSS. Tho Meianesian Misssion auxiliary screw barqucntine Southern Cross, 124 tons, Captaiu Jacob, arrived in harbour on Saturday evening from her tirst mission cruise, and anchored off Orakei. Wearfj indebted to Captain J. Jacob for the following particulars of her cruise, sincc receipt of his report of the farmer part of her passage, which has already bfien published in the Hkkald The Southern Cross left Norfolk Island, on her second crniso to the Islands, Septombcr Oth, with Rov. C. Bice, Mr. Kenny, and six Melanesiaus; had a good run of 100 miles from the island, when she encountered a very heavy gale from the north-west, which lasted 3G hours. Vessel under storm fore-and-aft canvas. She went along very dry and comfortably. 15th, passed Tanna and Eromango, arriving at Ambrym at 5 p.m. on tho lGth. Landed Mr. Kenny till the vessel's return from the Solomon Islands. 17th, landed Rev. C. Bice and his boys at Warigi, Leper's Island, and sailed for Mota, where she arrived next d;vy, after a very quick run. Found the Revs. Codrington and Sclwyn in good health. Got them on board, and sailed for tho Solomon Islands. 21st, sighted Santa Catalina. 23rd, off ObouU (Florida), found Mr. Brook in good health. ?4th, otl Isabella. Mr. Codrington and party went on shore. Noon, calm weather, got up steam, vessel being at the mercy of a strong current setting to the N.W. In the afternoon, Mr. Codrington and party came on board. Steamed out by the Pearl Reef to have a good look at it. 25th. anchored in Curngoa harbour. A great number of natives came on board. Got Rev. Mr. Brook and hi 3 bovs on board; 20th, got underweigh to beat back i through the Straits. H.M. gun-boat Conflict called ;at Obouli during Mr. Brook's stay. 30th, off Saua (MUauta). Messrs. There were Lhrre labour vussuis at Ambrym —the *J.«scn, Donald McLsan, and Lady Darliug. The captain of the latter vessel told Mr. Kenny of the massacre, at Tasico, of the captain, mate, and four hands of the schooner Zephyr. While at Savo Mr. Codrington was told the mate and Government agent of the labour vessel Southern Cross were killed at Venikora. The snatchsnatch vessels are as numerous as ever; counted twelve during our cruise. 14th, anchored at Moy for a short time. 4 pm. got underweigh for Norfolk Island. Arrived there on the night cf the 23rd. Had strong S.E winds all the passage. 24th, landed the Mission party. Sailed for Auckland on Tuesday, 27th, at 4.30 p.m.* Had moderate E.N.E. and N.E. winds with line weather. Made the land on 30th, at noon, Cap ? lirett S. V. 25 miles. Health of the people at Norfolk Island very good. The whaling season not remunerative, which is a great loss to the community. Unless th*v get rain soon what crops they have in the ground will be l-\«t. Th*y have had a long spell of dry weather. Threo whaling ships off the island — California, Mary Fraser, <fcc. The gentlemen belonging to the Mission are very pleased with their vessel. The ventilation and fine saloon, combiued with her admirable*qualities and other comforts are highly satisfactory, fchc has been triud in all winds and weathers, andhas proved herself in every way a fast sailer and good sea-boat. A more suitable vessel the Mission could not have for the work, which must be very pleasing to the builder, designer, and all who have the goad of the Mission at heart. Captain Jacob brings the vessel into port in a clean and trim condition.
