THE GOLDFIELDS.

[pboh otjb own cobeespondent.] THE CALEDONIAN. GOLD IN THE IOW-LEYEE.

THA3TE3, Tuesday. CALEDOHIAN ia the cry of every person at the " Corner," and the intense interest that is felt by all those in the habit of speculating, would .lead the uninitiated to believe that something more than usual has taken place. Such ia the case, for some very good stone indeed has been obtained from the now or No. 4 winze of the 260-feet level. The quality of this stone is very good, and superior to anything ever seen below the intermediate level, but as the stones are being sent to Auckland, I leave them .to speak for themselves. The No. 4 winze is the mo3t northern of those that have and are being sunk below tho No. 2 or 260-feet level, and is situated close to, or at the junotion of Nos. 1, 2, and specimen lodes. For some days past a few colors have been seen in the hanging-wall portion of tho lode, where there is a searnfrom 3 to 5 inches wideband tho deeper they have sunk, and stronger the colours havo become, until this morning, at a depth of ten feet below the 260-fect level, there is a show of gold unsurpassed since tho best days of tho Otago run. On my visit the seam showed good solid gold for about nino inches in length, whilo there is more scattered for about three feet to the left or southern side of tho winze. Since my departure the gold has been found below the seam, or near the centre of the lode, which I trust is an indication that the gold is making. Tho constitution of tho lode has undergone a great chaDgo since Saturday, and is daily becoming more like tho Otago run, as tho white, friable quartz, or decomposed silica, is abundant. Bolow this scam the quartz is of a hard blue character, with a little moro mineral than of late, making tho entire width of. tho lodo over Bix feet, with a splendid hanging-wall. At this early period of the discovery of gold, it would be injudicious to speculate as to its permanoney, and porhap3 its richness will not bo accepted until tho stones aro seen, but one thing is quite certain, that the telegrams forwarded today by tho manager, aro very temperato indeed, and this is acknowledged by those who havo seen the goldon stones. I would strongly advise, holders to retain their shares for the present, until another lump of the reef is broken out, which I suppose will bo tomorrow or' Thursday i for. if it should maintain, or strengthen as it has been doing, then I Bliould moat certainly be led to beHovo in the prospect of tlip lost run of gold being recovered.

Bied in Hand.—To-morrow this company will commence to send Btuff to the Imperiul Crown battery, where lO.hoads of stampers will be employed for a short time. Tho stuff will chicfly bo from tho stopcß and drive of tho main level, with a little from the winze at a depth of 36 feet, so that it will bo a fair test of the value of that level. Tho cross cut E., or towards the creek, is being pushed ahead, for tho purpose of intersecting reefs that aro known to run parallel with the Karaka Greek.

Siiamhock Batteb?.—-Tho full forco of this battery commenced this morning upon lots for various tributers in tho locality. Ten hoads for the "West Coast (Morrison's) tribute, ten for Wade Nos. 1 and 2 tributes, fivo for tho Shamrock, and fivo for tho Golden Age tributo.

The Warden sold to-day tho forfeited ground formerly known as tho Royal Standard, situated on Murphy's Hill. Thevo wero niue applicants, but at tho sale liii.'c or no competition took place, and it was knocked down for £6.
