There has been an improved trade dona in the import market to-day. The tone of the market is decidedly better, and altogether a more satisfactory aspect is presented. Tn breadstuff's an extensive business has been reported, the low prices ruling for flour having encouraged the larger buyers to come forward and operate more freely. We hear of some six hundred tons of flour, of various brands, having changed hands at higher rates than could have been obtained at the auction sales yesterday. Trade parcels have also been cpiittcd at our quotations of £14. An improved feeling in favour of wheat has also been evinced ; inquiries have been experienced which may yet lead to business. A rumour is nlso cum nt that a newly arrived shipment of Adelaide wheat, consisting of 14,000 bushels, has beeu placed in one line, bid the statements regarding this sale have been of so contradictory a nature as to prevent us from referring to it other than as above. The smaller buyers do not show much anxiety to purchase ; we retain our trade quotation of Gs. Gd. for best' Adelaide, better offers have been made for New Zealand. Firmness in maize is limited to fhe disposal of trade parcels at 4s. 4d. There is a light inquiry for oata from the country; holders ask 4s. 4d. to 4s. Gd., according to the quality. A sample of new Cape barley, grown at Grcenhills, has been shown in the market; the quality is superioiy.and its early growth has excited some surprise. A shipment of malt, about 1,500 bushels, has been disposed ofatOs. 3d. We note sales of caudles to a fair extent: we understand that some 3,000 baxes have been taken up at IOJd., while in most cases lid. is asked for best brands. Dried fruits are wanted, but the prices asked have deterred buyers from purchasing to much extent. In teas, the only transaction to report consists of the damaged portion of the Feronia's cargo, comprising 2,039 packages, which realised middling prices, condition considered. The balance of the Isabella Browne's fine teas will bo offered for sale to-morrow. Kerosene oil is steady at the higher rates lately reported ; 500 eases Devoe's were placed at Is 11.U1. A private telegram advises the month's shipments to ill the colonies as 14,000 cases. In liquids, we leant of the disposal of

1,000 cases BerthwieVs stout on private terms. We hear that the last shipment for the season of Bass's bulk beer—so hhds.—-has just arrived, and been sold to land, on terms withheld. The demand for Wild's No. 3 pale ale and double stout is reported on as on the increase : a line of 50 ldids. of the latter was sold this week. There is also a brisk demand from the country for beers in bulk and in bottle. — Ar'jux, November 12. SYDNEY. Investors' operations in the stock and share market, during the past week, have been on a lhiled scale. Sellers still continue to predominate, but (here is a feeling that prices of dividend-paying stocks are not likely to go lower. There have been a few transactions in bank shares, at last week's rates. City at 11V, Joint Stock at BT,8 T , and New South Wales at, 30, 39V, and 40. Commercial or New Zealand have not been dealt in. Union changed hands at 49. The following table exhibits the state of the market at close : —

Country orders, in anticipation of the Christmas trade, have kept some of the wholesale houses tolerably busy for some days past, but this demand has been vei-y little felt by others engaged in the imoort markets. Brcadst-uH's move slowly iu bakers' lots, at :Cl4 to £15; where parcels are forced upon the market considerably less money has to be accepted. Thereis hardly any sale for wheat at holder.?' quotations. Bulk and bottle ale is without alteration, best brands of the former are worth £7, bottled 9s 3d to 10s. Brandies aro quiet at 7s Gd to 7s 9d for trade quantities. The largest holders of rum are firm in their demands for small lots. Some outside parcels are offered at less money ; lis is asked foi- geneva. An invoice offered at auction on "Wednesday failed to llnd a market. A quantity of wines and spirits was similarly dealt with. There have been some trade sales of candles at last week's quotations, and the market closes firm. Currants are very saleable at 4Jd to s§d for sound lots ; inferior and faulty being from 4cl to 4Vd. Other descriptions of dried fruits are in better demand. Cornsacks are held for an

advance ; small lots have been taken at lis | ■ 3d ; several lots are held for lis 9d, some ask I < 12s. Woolpacks dull. Groceries and oilmen* s 1 stores have been dealt in at current rate:-. I ' Kerosene oil is held for 2s 2id to 2s 3d ; sales J i were made at a slightly lower rate. Castor , in bulk brought 5d at auction. Cocoanut is still affected by the high rate of freight io London. Iu metals, we hear of a limited business in galvanized iron on terms withheld. Sales of rice are confined to lots of a ton or two, for which prices are unchanged. Sugars are so scarce that prices of ration and counter sorts are quite nominal. The uonarrival of the Isle of "Wight has run the Sugar Company out of stock. The Charlotte Andrews, from Mauritius for Sydney, was telegraphed off the Otway to-day. The tea market has hardened since the arrival of the mail news bringing rumours of the loss of the Bella Ross for the colonies, with 245,0001b. The Mobill is also missing, and a third, the Hanover, is overdue.— Herald, Nov. 27. ADELAIDE. Wheat is dull and prices nominal; offered at 5s sd, without buyers. Flour, equally quiet, and priees nominal and unaltered. General Merchandise—The hot weather appears to have some influence on the import market to-day, as business has been entirely neglected, and the only transactions done have been at auction, where several lots of merchandise were sold under hammer, the particular's of which we annex. Messrs. Townsend, Botting and Co. sold today the balance of the cargo of sugars ex Escape, from Mauritius, as follows ;—Snowdrops, £-10 10s; white crystals, £39 10s; brewers' ditto, £34 to £36 10s; Californian counter, £31. 12s 6d to £35 5s : brown crystal, £31 7s Gd ; bright brown, £30 12s Gd to £30 17s Gd. Also balance of cargo ex Prospero, from >Tava, consisting of about 1700 mats, at following prices:—Brown to light brown crystals and counters, £29 7s Gd to £31 17s 6d,— Jlcgisicr, November 17.

lIOBAET TOWN. In breatlstuffs there is a general feeling that prices will recede. Wheat has been sold at 6s 3d to 6s 6d for first-class samples. Flour is still quoted by the millers at £14 to £15. Bran in good demand at Is 2d. The wool market is depressed, and there is no competition.— Mercury, November IS.
