LOSS OF THE SHIP GENERAL GRANT AT THE AUCKLAND ISLANDS.

HER MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE EXPLAINED.—7O LIVES LOST—IO RESCUED. The whaling brig Amherst arrived at Bluff Harbour on the 13th ult., with ten survivors of the ill-fated ship General Grant, which was lost at Auckland Islands on the 14th May, 1866. Wo extract the following from the Wellington Evening News, forwarded to that paper by their Dunedin telegraphic correspondent: — Dunedin, Jan. 13. The Amerioan ship [iGeneral Uranfc, of Boston, 1200 tons, Captain Loughlan, sailed from Melbourne on tho 4th May, 1866, for London, with a cargo o wool and six boxes of gold. Sighted the Auckland Island on the 15th; weather thick. At night found ship clone to the land ; a strong current settinghor towards the shore at 1.80 e.m. On the 14th, ship struck against perpendicular roots, higher than tho ship's mast, on the west of the island. At every roll of the sea large pieces of rook fell on the deck. The yards and maete fell with a crash. Tho ship was now firmly embedded between two high overhanging headlands, and they were compelled to launch the hoate over the storn. The wind and sea at daylight inoreased fearfully. The boat* were goi out, and filled with passengers and crew, and disappeared in the boiling eurf. Sixteen out of eighty-three fiouls succeeded in landing on the islaiid, after three days and nights in open boats. On 22nd January, 1867, the chief officer and threo of the crew left in a beat and endeavoured to reach New Zealand. One man died on the island, Nine men and the stewardess were taken off by the whaliug brig Amherat on the 21st November, 1867, and landed at the Bluff Harbour laet night. An official enquirj is now being held by the SubCollector of Customs, the Besident Magistrate, and Captain Waldron, into the cause of wreok. t-PECiAL Telegham.—The names of the passengers eared are—James Teer, Patriok Coughey, Nioholae Allan, and David Ashworth. Those of the crew alive are—Mary Ann Jewel (stewardess), Cornelius Drew, William Ferguson, Aaron Haipnan, A. M. Sagguilly, and Joseph Jewel.

THE MIBSING- BOAT'S CREW. Invercargill, Saturday, 2.25. The belief of the possibility that Mr. Brown, and the boat's crew, which left Auckland Island, on the 22nd January, 1867, for New Zealand, has been driven on to Campbell Island, or eome other, caused a movement amoDg the residents here, to have the Amhoret equipped and sent on a search. The Provincial Government has now undertaken the whole responsibility of thie expedition. The Amherst is to be equipped and sent to examine all the islands in the vicinity of the Aucklimde. She will probably Bail from the Bluff on Tuesday. Every attention continues to be paid to the survivors.
