THE COLD WATER CURE.

Asr old correspondent of the 18th Royal Irish has favored us with a squib illustrative of an evening party at Parnell, at which a bucket of cold water and two cups figure in the background. "Mine Host," upon that occasion, gave a convincing proof that lie possessed the two rare qualities of common sense and moral courage. To ply the ladies with wine in the heat of a midnight dance was evidently not in accordance with his ideas of propriety as a father andj a friend ; and the very highest compliment he could pay to the gallant officers of the Royal Irish was to show that they required no artificial stimulant to brace up their nerves, especially in the presence of the ladies. Anything becomes fashionable now-a-days. Look at the head-dresses of the ladies ; even at church of a Sunday. Really the bucket with a cup to each handle may yet becoiuo a conspicuous object in every fashionable ball-room. An essay on "fashions," as "illustrative of the power of "custom and public opinion," would form an excellent subject for the members of the new Literary Institute. (On arrival in Auckland, by one of the "Wanganui Garrison.) 'Tis just three years or thereabouts As I remember well, That to Auckland and its citizens We bade a long farewell : And now once more we meet again, And friendships old renew, Though, perchance, of those wo knew before, We now can count but few. And with ncw/««« that we meet, N.ow ,/<«// iona, too, we see ; Though of the latter, I must say They don't agree with me. So, not to keep you in suspense, List to me and I'll tell, One fashion new, that seems to hold Its empire, in Parnell. In place of all the jolly hops That were so free and hcr.rty, One, now-a-days, is asked out to A " bread and butter" party. The first time that I heard the phrase, I said, " Of course, why this is An entertainment were we'll meet With 'bread and butter' misses." But, no, thc.j&idics still are fair, To them jj? don't allude ; To breather a word in their dispraise, I woul&aiot be so rude. The evil that I speak of's one No fellow can endure, And the " Short Title of this Act" . Shall be " The Water Cure." For you must know that at these fetes. In place of wine or beer, " Eau naturel's" the only drink, Or the cup that does not cheer ; And all I get the whole night through, If sworn before a juror, Is a microscopic piece of cake, And a pint of " aqua pura." In vain, with heat o'ereonie, we say, As pass the liours by, " Give us some sherry, or we faint, A sandwich, or we (lie." Alas ! in answer to our call Nor wine nor sandwich's there, Where <« the suppler, vain we ask ? And echo answers—where ? \ But in its place a Bucket stands, To which two cups arc fast ; A change there is, niy country men, To banquets of the past ! Indeed, on reaching home 'tis hard To realise the scene ; " Not to a dance," we say, " but to A Turkish bath we've been." And now, Amphytrions of Parnell, I ask if this is right. Is this the only beverage, when Alone, 3'ou drink at night ? To others as you'd be done by, Do you, and then I think No more complaints your friends will make Of what they get to dririk. And how can you expect a girl To either dance or spoon, When, no doubt, she's nearly faulting for An ice, or macaroon ? So, I'll finish with a proverb here, Which is not found in Tuppur, "Whennext you want your friends to come, Just add, ' P.S.— There's Supper.' " Paddy Miles. — Wanganui Times, January 21.
